In Extremo sounds pretty good, I liked "Vollmond" alot when I heard it. Their stuff sounds very well polished and precise, I like that. I have no tolerance for sloppy recording and musicianship lately, ive been burned on quite a few cd's that are just a totally unprofessional waste of time altogether. Good drink coasters. "This Corrosion" was produced fairly well, but the content stripped down to it's bare frame. The background vocals were half that song, cut out entirely!
But to the topic of this thread, i think the AvP movie is a good idea. It's only one of the biggest sci-fi fantasies out there, theyd have to try and screw that one up. And it's at least guaranteed to make somewhat of a decent profit, who knows maybe a major hit if released at the right time. I guess we'll know if there are a bunch of people dressed up as Predators and Aliens standing outside in line, hours before the tickets go on sale!
As far as the "Vs. movies suck" thing goes, generally the red flag goes up even for a b-movie fan like me when I see that. But alas, I just saw "Freddie vs Jason" in Las Vegas last weekend and thought it was pretty cool!! _________________ “Then away out in the woods I heard that kind of a sound that a ghost makes when it wants to tell about something that's on its mind and can't make itself understood, and so can't rest easy in its grave, and has to go about that way every night grieving.”-Mark Twain |

I hope they use the first novel as the screenplay. It was wicked. _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi

I think this will ROCK! The comics sucked...actually pretty much all the Aliens & Predator comics sucked...but It'll be cool. Paul Anderson did Event Horizon, Resident Evil, and the 1st Mortal Kombat. These are great flicks...they don't pretend to be anything other than what they are. He will pull it off!!! _________________ Between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities…there was an Age undreamed of, when shining kingdoms lay spread across the world like blue mantles beneath the stars…Hither came Conan, the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand…to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandaled feet. - Robert E. The trailers look good. I am NOT pleased that the movie is PG-13 though. 2 R predators and 4 R Aliens does not equal a PG-13 combination of both franchises.
Here in the US, you can get the collector's edition of Predator on DVD for $16.00 at Target & Walmart. This rocks because they give you a free movie-ticket for Alien vs Predator. So, you are basically paying $7.00 or $8.00 for the DVD then depending on your ticket prices.
I still have hope for this movie though...Resident Evil & Even Horizon were both directed by this guy and they were great popcorn flicks! I just hope this does not suck like Riddick! - Robert E. Indeed, every other movie was R ... I shudder to think what may have been lost. *Hopes for a R rated DVD release.*
Still, they'll really, really, really have to try to screw this up. We're talking making the Aliens the incredibly good and noble but misunderstood guys out to stop the evil Predators from taking over earth level of screw up. We're talking Predator's singing refrains from HMS Pinafore and teaching humanity the true meaning of love and compassion screw up. So long as there is even one scene with a Predator slamming an Alien through a wall it will be worth the money to see big screen.
I just hope the humans aren't too chatty/hog up all the Monster Hacking Time. That would be unfortunate (but expected). _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi

I have to admit, the trailers did catch my interest. Calling the room with the alien eggs "The Sacrificial Room" strikes me as a nice touch. _________________ Freeeeeeedom! Thank heavens it's summer!

Ok so I have seen it. Well since it was PG13 don’t expect any gores or course language for that matter. The story is original (but I have no idea how close is to the comics because I’ve never read them) and could make sense if you close one eye. Visual effects and sound is average at best.
I never felt anticipation for the next scene, probably because the director didn’t want to scare people too much. The movie would be definitely better if was rated “R” _________________ Money - An article which may be used as a universal passport to everywhere except heaven, and as a universal provider of everything except happiness. |

I have to say... that was pretty much EVERYTHING I could have hoped for in an AVP movie.
It was actually a LOT closer to the plot from the novel than I thought it would be... and since that novel was what fans have been screaming for to be the movie for a decade...
The Aliens and Predators looked better than ever. The special effects were top notch ... like you'd hope since both Alien and Predator set the bar for special effects at the times they were released.
As for the question how does 4 R rated alien movies and 2 R rated Predator movies add to PG-13? Simple... you know people are dying horribly but it's not shown anywhere near as graphically as it was in, say, Aliens. Certainly not as graphically as in Predator or Predator 2. Ah, the power of inferred violence... ever the bane of censors (as the shots left absolutely no doubt as to what exactly just happened yet broke no censorship laws).
It must be noted that censorship does not extend to cover movie monsters in the slightest as both Alien and Predator are dismembered and splashed all over the place gleefully and graphically.
If you're a fan of Alien, Predator, and especially Alien vs Predator I don't think this movie will disappoint. There's one little part I think the movie could have done without but I'm not going to spoil anything.
One technical nitpick is the timeframe of things. In Alien it took a day for things to start happening to poor John Hurt ... in this movie start to finish aliens incubated, birthed, and hit maturity in a matter of ... hours... tops. Then again following the canon on the matter would have led to more human screentime and less knocking of aliens through walls. I'll take the technical hit for the end result.
edit:
Seth... were the special effects average at best? Really? Or has special effects evolved to the point where if they're not crap they don't stand out. I lean towards the latter ... because the Aliens and Predators have NEVER looked so good in a movie. And they were pretty awesome to begin with.
I agree with the scare factor, though. It had an edge of tension until things started happening... but that's because everyone knew what was going to start happening. The thing was... after all the comics, novels, theme park rides, decades of multimedia, even references on children's cartoons ... perhaps the ideas that were original and scary in the first movies (though Predator never scared me in the slightest) are a victim of their own exposure. _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi

I wouldn’t say crap, just OK. You’re probably right with nowadays technology, CGA and all the tricks in the book I expected something that it will stand out. I don’t know what I was looking for, but that wasn’t it.
20 years ago and then some when the first “Alien” was released that was actually scary movie, granted I was then 20 and then some years younger - easier to scare, impress and satisfy, but now... _________________ Money - An article which may be used as a universal passport to everywhere except heaven, and as a universal provider of everything except happiness. |

PG-13. What a crime. This should have been R. After viewing this I am trimming my collection down to the 3 best movies...
Alien
Aliens
Predator
Not only that I am afraid to watch Resident Evil2...after all this is the same director.
I cannot believe he made a sweet sci-fi/horror movie like Event Horizon...and then he does this.
I almost like Alien3 better...at least it was a well-made movie...even if you did hate everything about it. - Robert E. Harsh. Well, I liked it. But AVP is pretty much my favorite franchise and the closest thing to fanboydom I've got.
As an aside, I disliked Event Horizon. The only scare factor the director seemed to know was "Turn volume to maximum after quiet NOW!". I ended up with a headache and wishing I'd saved my 7 bucks. _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi

I hated all of the Alien movies, except for Resurrection, with a passion.
I could tolerate Predator because of the interesting story concept and cool alien camouflage. The typical "I'm so dumb I drool" Ahhhnold action movie cinematic style put me off. I felt the concept would have been better served by a Dark City or Blade Runner style re-enforced plot treatment rather than focusing on smearing mud all over the Governor of California. To me, Predator was an idea that deserved better than the limited action film genre.
Predator 2 was just ridiculous--Danny Glover's "now I'm Riggs" routine was irritating to me. And frankly, I didn't think there was really enough movie there for talented people like Danny Glover and Gary Busey to get in the game.
I really, really enjoyed AvP though... go figure. |
