Stuck on Endgame -- Spoiler

I'm stuck on the endgame. I've been locked in the last room with Iserbius for two hours -- two hours, I'm not exaggerating! -- and I can't figure out a way to kill him. My spells seem to bounce off him, and no matter how many times I wack him with the meteor sword, he doesn't die. It occurred to me that he may be healing himself at the burning altar, so I tried dousing it, but it won't go out.

Can somebody please tell me how to kill him?

(At the start of the fight I kept killing his summoned demons by climbing up the pillars and hitting them from above, but finally, one of his demons got stuck on a pillar, and since then, I haven't had to worry about them. I killed so many demons during this time that I gained about 15,000 xp and went from level 8 to level 9.)

At first I had the same problem, then I stopped and browsed my spellbook. I found an easy way to kill him within just a few minutes. I had a fair amount of both mana and health potions and had a high spell casting ability. So, I prepared 3 negate magic spells in my quickslot (only needed one of them turned out). I charged him, cast the negate magic spell before reaching him and then stayed on top of him hacking away with the meteor sword. It took a bit of healing potions and mana (to keep the spell running), but he went down since he couldn't heal, summon demons, or blast me with nasty spells. Good luck!

well, kinda...

I haven't beat the sucker yet, but I found the Negate Magic spell somewhat useful, but his tentacles still pack a punch... I went into the fight with about 10 healing potions, that was NOT enough, I'll go back and alchemy up some more before facing him again. That particular spell stays going until you turn it off or run out of mana, so as long as you have plenty of mana potions, you will only need it memorized once...

if nothing at all happens, be sure to use the meteor sword you forged in the dwarven mine! There should be a sequence after which you fight Akbaa, at first you only see a derenaged Iserbius

Thank you, everybody, for the help. I just tried using Negate Magic but I don't have enough potions with me. Guess I'll have to go back to a saved game, load up on drugs, and try again.

Is this the only way to kill Iserbius? What happened to the design philosophy of providing at least four ways to accomplish each task?

(Thanks for the reminders, Garrett. Yes, I had triggered the cut scene by hitting Iserbius.)
