That's like saying that 1024x819 looks better on 17" monitor than 1024x768. Every resolution there is is made to be 4x3 ratio except 1280x1024. Whoever invented that resolution should be shot. It looks horrible. It squishes the height of your screen by almost 7%. In other words, it distorts your images by 7% in y direction.

I think 1280 x 1024 was initially for graphics intensive work, when most of us were still using 800 x 600. But since then the ordinary/commercial graphics card has improved to 1600 x 1200 and they've decided to throw in support for 1280 x 1024 as well.
It's not for gamers, like us. But some of us don't only play games on our computers.

I like the 1280*1024 resolution. Everybody has his/hers own favourite. I don't even notice that the picture is of by 7% as you say.
Otherwise i would go for the max resolution of 1600*1200.
