Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds remake

Any War of the Worlds fans here at RPGdot? I loved the book and the original movie when I was a kid. There was a really violent mini-series in the late 80s. I swear it had Adrian Paul of Highlander. I hope to see the re-make on Friday night with my friends. So far it is scoring a 71% with 129 reviews at Rotten Tomatoes. What do you think?

I think... Independance Day.

As is often the case the rip-off appears to be the original when the original is gone from sight too long.

I'll see it... Tom Cruise I like as an actor, Spielburg I love as a director ... but it doesn't fill me with even a mild sense of anticipation, like Batman Begins and Star Wars Ep 3 did. I have no doubt it will be a good movie... but if my friends weren't going I would probably give it a pass over dragging my fiance to it (she hates movies, she claims, yet thoroughly enjoys ones that I select as long as they're not *totally* mindless).

And Adrian Paul does a LOT of syndicated shows Highlander (lead), Tarzan (guest antagonist hunter), Tracker (lead) ... it wouldn't surprise me if he was in the War of the Worlds Series one bit.

Edit: The Glory that is Google makes experts of us all. Adrian Paul was indeed in War of the Worlds, season two. He starred as John Kincaid.

War of the Worlds is the ultimate remake. This movie is much darker and has alot more death and destruction than ID4. Many people complain about the ending, yet I don't mind as it's like the book and original movie. They show the aliens, the tripods, and them destroying the earth and killing tons of people. The audio is so well-done, that I can still hear the tri-pods' crushing footsteps and the aliens' archaic language a day later. The imagery seemed like a great mixture of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Minority Report, and WWII type movies. This is one of the greatest catastrophe movies ever filmed!

The poster at my theater was much more interesting than the bland one-sheet I posted above...

A so-so adaptation. They got the gist of it, but omitted all the fascinating technical aspects and most of the speculative dialogue. The only thing they focused was to show off their "kewl" special effects ad nauseum.

Also too short.

Agreed. Having the attention focus on one family fleeing in terror loses something from the original news-narrated radio play. The questiong, the terror.

War of the Worlds 2005 had its share of moments and was worth watching. Still, many people left the theater saying 'uh... what the... they just... whaaa?'. I'm not sure enough people bought the ending (faithful to the book and honestly the most LIKELY ending in science fiction ever) to ensure this one to be a record-buster... and honestly I'm not sure it deserves to be.

The special effects and sound *were* fantastic, though. The first time a tripod opened fire on a crowd I winced a little... and that feeling of 'damn, that's harsh' never really faded.

The first two-thirds of this movie were one hell of a ride. It was the most moving and shocking disaster movies ever filmed, and then it lost direction completely.

I know the ending is from the book, but it still isn't good.
