Not too few NPCs I hope!!

Now, it's true that Gothic's NPCs are light-years ahead of Morrowind's in terms of interactivity. But judging from the latest G2 screenshots, and the info on the official site, only 500 NPCs will grace the world -- while the world size itself has increased five times. I hope 500 NPCs won't make the world look too "empty". Sure, wilderness areas with few or no NPCs are cool, but so are crowded towns! What I liked best about G1 was the feeling of a bustling camp around you. Hope they maintain this feeling in G2.

Perhaps they mean 500 real NPCs (as opposed to the "Digger" and "Shadow", etc.)

500 is alot in a RPG. Morrowind have about 3000, but how many of them have something unique to say? 100? and how many of them actually has a "role" in the story? I could count with one hand. So don't worry about it. 500 is more than enough.

Well, if there is a REAL war between the Orcs and the humans, then 500 NPCs might seem limited. I would certainly enjoy watching the war!

Do you go right? Or do you go left? A simple decision, yes? No ambiguities. Only the dream of the path not taken! And so one might stand in this place and contemplate for a long while. What will I miss if I go left? What will I lose if I go right? And in my indecision, have I chosen a worse fate?

Hehe. As somebody in the Morrowind forums put it, NPCs in that game are "quest vending machines: just click on a static NPC to get a quest!"
