Arx Fatalis Review at GameOver

A rather lukewarm review of Arx Fatalis can be found at GameOver today. Their overall rating is 65%, and their conclusion reads like this:

I think most of all I’m disappointed in the general flow of the AF adventure. Again comparing it to a more than five year old game, the first Elder Scrolls, in that game I could go anywhere and do pretty much anything I wanted to. As a low level character I would sometimes wander into a dungeon way too difficult for me – I would have to come back later when I had more experience – but when I wanted to come back and take another crack was my choice. The claustrophobia of the AF caves extends to more than just the atmosphere – you often have only a single choice of where you can go or what you can do next. I can’t get through that gate until I show the guard a pass, I can’t get a pass until I search that area, so where do I go? I go to that area – I have no choice, no options, no adventure. This plot train rides on the rails with nowhere else to go – all aboard!

So, my first foray into the world of computer RPGs in years is a big letdown. Whatever cosmic forces that lead me to this, that shouted into my brain that this was the game that I wanted to play, is probably lying back and having a good laugh at my expense right about now. And to think that I took a break from reviewing the insipid O.R.B. to play Arx Fatalis, hoping it was going to be a step up, only to find that it was a different insipid game, not a better one. Oh yeah, I look like some kind of moron now. Master of Orion 3 had better save me from all this crap, that’s all I’ve got to say.

hmm

I would disagree with the lineararity aspect of AF. I agree there is a path to follow but I managed to delve into the dwarven mines and the yslid temple (amongst others) prior to actually needing to go there.

I have really enjoyed AF (more so than I thought I would).

Nah its the logical successor to Ultima Underworld (one of all time favorites).
Anyhow I got bored of Morrowind.

I am also getting sick of people comparing every rpg that comes out to the first or second Elder Scrolls games. I have an old computer lying around here somewhere and I'll gladely give it to him so he can play his games. He only has to promise me one little thing. Never, ever try to review a game ever again.

I think hes a bit unprofessional in his review. He makes many statements that Are for other games. If he wants to write a review for daggerfall or morrowind he should do so. I think he wronged himself in even mentioning other games of comparison its his review. For one he made it sound like for of a fanboy review than a real intelligeent one.

Review?

I realize Arx is different, but this guy missed the mark. He needs to get the game out and try it again. I'm playing for the fourth or fifth time, and I go at it by a different route each time. Granted there are some things that must be done before others, but he makes it sound like you're locked up and have one path and no other choices. He should read the posts on the forum if he needs some help finding new ways to play. The bugs were real, but not a problem anymore. Great game.
