I wouldn't like that, maybe durability, but the gothic series seemed more of a place where you cultivate a super hero, so it wouldn't feel right with the game

Indeed cptmaxon, it just wouldn't fit in Gothic. And I must say: Morrowind never let me connect with the world and it was certainly not 'a bit better' cause of such a system. I would even say that in this perticular case it hold me back from playing the game.

I'd love to see the hero fighting a massive orc with a sword, after wearing each other down the hero goes to parry the orcs swing and it fractures the hero's sword.

Then the hero goes in for his own attack and swings over the orc as the orc raises his arm and the sword breaks against it and the hero is only left with a small dagger like broken sword.

Then the orc races his sword against the hero and comes in for the attack, just as the hero sidesteps out of the way and then circles around the back of the orc and with the broken sword climbs up onto the orcs back and stabs the broken sword into the orcs neck killing him.

Sword-breaking really could be a game-ruining feature if not handled well, and if you give the player and AI the ability to do it, it would be very difficult to get right.

If you want to see a good example, check out the PS2 game Way Of The Samurai. It really forces you to keep a cool head in combat. Although iirc, this game still only used a variation of the RPG-style durability rating - there was no specific move that allowed you to intentionally break an opponent's weapon (although theirs could break too, just like yours, through carelessness).

It is something I would like to see in a game that realistically depicts sword combat, but most RPGs do not fit that description - they're more like "swashbuckling" movies, the combat is romanticised, not realistic. But if we ever see the medieval soldier equivalent of Operation Flashpoint, sword-breaking weapons and shields would be right at home there (and what a great game that could be )!
