Recharging Wands

I am an Elf Mage, so consequently rely upon magic instead of force.

The most useful item I had was the "Wand of Sleep" with about 50 charges.

I thought that once the Wand was "empty", I could sell it to a merchant and then buy it back recharged....but once it was empty it disappeared from my inventory.

Secondly, as a mage, my Magic Skill is "General". Can you specialise in schools of magic??
I have found some spells that are highlighted "Red" when I move my mouse over them, so I know I cant use them, but some that do not show as "Red", I cant use either. Any clues??

Regards,

Hexmaster

1) That was a 'feature' of BG2. It made no sense. What would a low level commoner know about recharging arcane items? In 3e (and second edition outside of BG2) when a wand uses it's last charge it generally becomes inert or shatters.

Recharging a wand in 3e requires the feat Craft Wand. Since there are no item creation feats in NWN, I'd imagine wands can't be recharged at all.

2) Yes. You can specialize in a school at character generation. In return you lose access to a school of spells, but gain +1 spells able to be memorized as long as that extra spell is of your specialized school.

You can't pick up a specialist wizard with an already existing mage.

3) Arcane spells are the only ones a wizard can use. If a spell is highlighted red it's likely a divine (cleric, ranger, druid) or Bard arcane spell.

You can't add spells to your spellbook until you're high enough level to cast them.
