HK-47 from SW:KoTR is moving up the list for me. "Query: I think this half sized bag of organics accuses you of false hood. Shall I blast it, master?", or something like that.

I'm quickly learning to love my new puppy in Fallout, Dogmeat!

He certainly is. He doesn't shoot me in the back like Ian does.

Yes Annah is definitely my favorite, and Dak’kon was a great tragic character as well.
Minsc: from BG2 (more conversation than in BG1)
Lilly: the Toreador(sp?) from Vampire
I know I’m forgetting people, or non-people as the case my be.

- Barett (sp?) from Final Fantasy 7.
- Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7 (best villain).
- The Princess from ICO.
- Maria from Silent Hill 2.
- The Kilrathi pilot who's fighting on your side in Wing Commander 3 (forgot the name).

1. Jan Jansen from BG2 - A wacky Swed.

2. Xan from BGI. I think that's his name but can't remember. He gives very interesting perspective about life. I was hysterial when he says before a battle "We are all gonna die !!"

3. Tomi from NWN. He has a funny story to tell and reminds me of an Aussie roomate I used to have.

4. Korgan from BG2. I think that's his name but not quite sure. He is the evil dwarve with an Irish accent. He is hilarious also. It is funny when Viconia make fun of his size.

Diego from Gothic (he changes in Gothic 2 so not there). He is an example of brilliance, and well worthy of a movie role.

My favourite NPC must be VAX from Wasteland. Ok, you couldn't actually talk to him and he didn't actually talk (much) with you, but.. You spent an eternity in the sewers, gathering parts, killing robots, digging through walls, jumping over chasms and getting poisoned, lost, hit by traps frustrated, stuck, you name it. So when you finally got to the assembly room and were able to create your own little helper robot, it was really great fun. He was also an enormous help during the last parts of the game (this was nearing the end) and could fight like ten Covenants (another NPC from Wasteland).

If we're using the term NPC as it has become known in CRPGs, then the cast of PS:T get my vote. I found Dak'kon (my favourite), Nordom, Morte and Ignus all fascinating (although I wouldn't have found Ignus so interesting if it weren't for the memories of his youth and his role late in the game), and the entire game had a generally high standard of characterisation.

I also quite liked RedXIII in Final Fantasy 7 and the Frog in Chrono Trigger.

If we're allowing a broader definition, then my number one NPC of all time is Shodan from the System Shock series, hands down. Absolutely the best, most unnerving and terrifying videogame villain ever . Also the best voice acting I've yet heard. Depicted much better in the first game, I think.

Trias and (moreso) Ravel in PS:T were quite interesting. Again, the storytelling techniques helped - that sensory stone experience was gripping and sticks in my mind as a high point in interactive storytelling so far.

Who else? Yorda in Ico (good one, Northchild), and the hanging man and most of the Knights in Azrael's Tear - another game with very good voice acting. And while I'm on the subject - there was an excellent character towards the end of System Shock 2, the scientist guy who was caught by The Many and whose voice logs really conveyed his terror as he gradually figured out his predicament. As voice-only NPCs go, he must be the best.

Carth from SW:KotOR. Then here are the famous 4 from Gothic (Diego, Gorn, Milten, Lester) - Xardas comes here too.

The last one that i remember now is Caius Cosades from Morrowind.

@Mercenary- All of them are great characters, but I think I still like Gothic's Diego the best. In Gothic 2 I was so disappointed when Diego had that southern accent. I think the person who voiced Lares in Gothic 2 should have voiced Diego as well.
