Can't save after entering dungeon!

Whenever I enter the dungeon below the graveyard where the woman was taken hostage I lose the ability to save! I thought maybe it was a localized thing, but even when I crawl out of the dungeon, no save ability! I have to reload. What's the deal?

Even when you leave? That's weird. Did you kill Jake?

I didn't kill Jake, because I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw I couldn't save. Is this some sort of perverse in-game design thing? I can't save until I kill the boss monster? Me no likee.

Yes, I think that's it. I also think the game autosaves before you take Jake on.
