Editing the 'zLevelLODStrength' in the .ini file appears to let you control how many polys are culled from distant objects. If you set this to 0, assuming your system can handle it, the landscape becomes much more solid - no longer do the 4 spires on top of the old camp tower shimmer in and out of existence etc. It really improved the look for me. I'm hoping the entry called model detail might remove 'monster-popup' as well.
