Will machines take over the world?

Technology becomes more and more advance each day. Perhaps one day there will be a real robot, but what would happen then? Will humans be controled by machines? I know this might be a silly idea, but I just want to hear some of your opinions.

Things are neither completely bright nor dark.

Do you go right? Or do you go left? A simple decision, yes? No ambiguities. Only the dream of the path not taken! And so one might stand in this place and contemplate for a long while. What will I miss if I go left? What will I lose if I go right? And in my indecision, have I chosen a worse fate?

Hollywood tells us that we will go to far and end up fighting against what we've created... a penalty for playing god.

Large amounts of people believe whatever is popular.

Scientists generally know better and will press on

The church will rail against anything regarded as divine providence.

Therefore: Man will create perfectly benign machines to assist in all things, the church will call it sinful, and the population will fearfully rise up and destroy the scientists and their creations.

Favorite Simpsons quote (after the meteor that would have destroyed the town burned up)

"Hurray! We're saved! Now let's smash the observatory so this never happens again!"

It's so true at times it hurts... it hurts...

I doubt it. Hollywood and science fiction writers aside, scientists for the most part are neither stupid nor evil genius. Even assuming that there might be a legitimate reason to aim for some sort of controlling robot (which I can't see), trapdoors and failsafes would presumably be built in to prevent such an event.

i think it'll happen like in WH40K. see there will be an era of great great technological achievement, all our problems will be solved, we'll finally visit all the planets and break out of our own solar system, visiting other systems, then other galaxies, our technology will surpass the wildest dreams of any of the modern scientists and all will be right with the world!!!

...and then we make contact...

man, who for so long saw even different kinds of people as a threat and simply there to be enslaved, will see great threats in these new and strange species, many of which are war-like to begins with. so man will either try to colonize the aliens' homeplanets, enslave the aliens, or simply kill them. the aliens will choose to retaliate. and man, being the ignoramous that he is, won't see what he has done wrong. all humanity shall dedicate themselves to the expansion of the Empire.

in this time, they shall forget the technological achievements. those they remember, they will not remember the origins of, or how the work. when confused as to how these great machines came about, they turn to the only other thing in their minds: Divinity. of course almost no one will remember Christianity, Buddhism, Hinuism, Islam, or Juddaism. so they turn to the only other "god" they know: the Emperor. they assume that all the technological achievements are gifts from gods, or gifts from the Emperor that always were, and must be used for war.

a new dark age. and so man enters his greatest period of achievement, at the same time, his greatest downfall...

sinister...isn't it?

Haven't they already?

Seriously, try to do anything these days that doesn't require some sort of machine. Whether it's a simple machine or complex. Without machines, everyday life as we know it would not be possible. As far as Robots taking over the world, it will depend on how advanced they get. If they can become self aware and self sufficient and become able to replicate themselves, then YES, eventually we will just be in their way and we will be eliminated.

Have you ever seen the movie "Battlefield: Earth"? it's with John Travolta. It's a good movie IMO... it describes a world like you said, but this time was the aliens that conquered the Earth, making the humanity lose his achievements and all the memory of the past... watch it if you have time!

It's not a good movie to see (and it's not a bad movie however) but it fits perfectly the scenario you described before...

hmmmmmm, well, there are a few theorys we can settle on.
1:humanity will turn on itself and destroy itself
2:robots will own all.
3:humans will become the dominant species in the UNIVERSE.
4: a men in black thing is gonna go on...
5: we are going to find out that the universe is just one big turd, and the planets revolving is just caused by the turd moving down the intestine... and in about a million years the giant ...(insert unknown alien/human species name here) will crap us out, we will get FLUSHED! and all die

Will robots take over the world? An interesting question. I haven't made up my mind either way, but I do like to speculate. Could a scientist envision making a malevolent AI robot that could eventually dominate the world? Yes, and I imagine someone will try when we get there. Will it succeed? Probably not; someone else equally or more intelligent (and with the help of others) will create something able to fight this threat off.

This is a common occurence in science. For example, look at computers today. Do people use them for mischeif or evil? Yes, I'm sure we can all agree on that. What keeps those from dominating computers? Everyone else keeps building programs to negate virii and etc. so that we can continue.

I also agree, however, to a degree with those who say nobody would do something so grandly evil. Technology exists now that could destroy or at least very nearly destroy humanity. E.g. we currently could quickly create a vast number of highly virulent, highly deadly viruses that could do us all in. Nobody has done it, however.

I imagine that if some area of science will eventually turn its head and bite humanity to death it will come from something we thought was malevolent or even beneficial, such as health care.

Or we'll all die when a giant meteor destroys the earth tomorrow.

More simple, Vaticide: put an A.I. in the computer of the U.S.Force or Russia Army... what do you think will happen if it choose to throw all the Atomic-Bombs? Maybe the American Force will destroy them before the explosion, but i'm not so crazy to think that the same will happen with the MIGHTY INVINCIBLE SUPER ITALIAN ARMY! I think 70% of the world can't do nothing to stop them...

and then no-one could play (made in German) Gothic 2!!!!!! ARRRGGG!
