Mystery from Massive Multiplayer.org <a href='http://www.massivemultiplayer.org/cnt.php?id=233' target='_blank'>reviewed</a> A Tale in the Desert and gives it a perfect score. Here's a small blurb:<blockquote><em>Unlike every other MMOG out there, there’s more than one task that’s going to reap you rewards. There’s no level treadmill here, as there are no levels. There are no monsters to fight, so you don’t have to worry about getting “killed.” You’re freed from the “kill or be killed” mentality. <br> <br>As a new player, you’re asked to make a few rudimentary items, and attend school to pay from some classes in stone-age skills (stone blade construction, brick rack constructions, wood plane construction, etc). From then on, once you’ve achieved citizenship in the game (automatic after 90 minutes in the game, or after having created enough of the basic items), your path is your own. You can continue to make a camp, and go through some repetitive tasks to gather materials and formulate some more advanced items. <br> <br>However, that’s not your only option: You can go out and challenge other players to structured games pulled out of Egyptian history, you can pass laws that directly effect game-play, or you can use the default remoteness of camps to set yourself up as a trader, running to and fro across the massive landscape. </em></blockquote>

Do you get breaks to yawn? Man does this mmorpg sound boring. Run back and forth in the wilderness and trade items. More and more mmorpgs are gearing for communal play. When are they gonna put out a mmorpg where you can play the entire mmorpg(from lvl 1 to whatever is the highest) ALONE if you want too? All the games out now,sooner or later you need a team to get the ultimate prize or reward.

Why would you want to pay $10 a month to play alone? Why not just grab Unreal Tournament and play alone? To me, playing alone in an MMORPG goes against the very concept of the genre...

I participated in the Tale beta (along with others here) and while it had it's tedious moments it's a unique concept that deserves success and is a lot of fun for the right gamer.

If anything, MMO games need to increase and improve their communal features (Ekim covered some of this in a recent column). It's hard to have a coherent player-oriented story in a MMO game, so communal playing is their real strength.
