If you do a search on this site, you will find a lot of answers to this. But to save you the time - YES. It is, without a doubt, the very best RPG I have played in a very long time. I get bored with games very easily (and thus do not even finish most). I have played this one three times all the way through and several short runs (when trying out other techniques).

However, if you do NOT like RPGs in general (you only like FPS, strategic warfare, etc.) then you likely will not like it. It is principally an RPG - from a first person point of view.

Aksing here won't really give you unbiased info...
It's third person BTW,not first person.
My best tip would be to try the demo if you have bandwidth to spare.(or know someone with a CD burner that has it)
I like the game a lot,so far it's Fallout/FO2 I like more in the genre.(even though imho Gothic's more an action adventure with RPG elements)
Made my top 5 games pretty easily and that list would be Quake,Fallout,FO2,Unreal and then Gothic.

No no, don't listen them, it's dangerous to play it! You'll get seriously addicted. Avoid it, do you hear AVOID IT! Just read this forum trough and you'll see how Gothicted we are here, we don't have any real life anymore, just Gothic this, Gothic that....

And Mud's special pink flavor.
I think we need some new inside jokes.
Hmm, I must be more tired than I thought, I can't come up with anything better than saying that the meatbugs are my cousins (look at my name), and that I will have revenge on all you bastards that helped Snaf make his soup. And that's just pathetic on my part.

Well, at least you got a lot of cousins down there in Big 'D'. Whoops! Squished a meatbug outside of Cavelorn's. Sorry!

Maybe we could compile a list of inside jokes from other games. For AoW it was the secret
Minotaur race. That's my contribution.
