Stupid skill question

The more I dig into it, the more useless the "spellcraft" skill seems to be. It sounds like it's important for arcane casters, but it really only controls counterspells.

Am I missing the boat on this, or have I been wasting skill points out the ying-yang?

I think (I don't know for sure) that it IS only useful for Arcane spellcasters.

When you get to epic spells, it also affects the casting. For example, Hellball will require 32 ranks of spellcraft to be learnt, and then cast, by the player.

I'm a Sorceror, which means i'm an Arcane Spellcaster right?

For a Sorceror, what is the best skill to level up?

I've been working on Concentration and Spellcraft.

Those two should be fine. Heal is always a good choice also. Depending on the mod I'm playing, I'll drop some points into Hide and Move Silently too. Nothing like sneaking to an advantagous place to cast that fireball.

In the true epic rules Knowledge: Arcana is important too, as it determines how often you can use an Epic Spell.

Spellcraft is critical for all casters at Epic.

Max it now, max it often. You have been warned.

@Xen- but as things stand right now at the SoU level of NWN, spellcraft is pretty useless for ALL classes right? Unless someone gets really excited about counterspells (and I'm sure there's about 1 person in the whole world that does), there don't seem to be any benefits to a high spellcraft skill. Or is the NWN manual missing a detail or two (lord knows it wouldn't be the first important detail missing)?

Well, there is the little fact that you're supposed to roll a spellcraft check in order to learn spells as a wizard as well.

Mostly it's used to identify spells cast against you so you can scream "NOOO!!! NOOO!!! NOT WEIRD!!! NOT WEEIIIRR----" and die horribly.

But at least you knew that you were dead while the animation was firing and why you died.
