God, I wish there was more variety to the music in this game! I have that damned "I'm walking around with not a care in the world" music playing in my heads all the time! I prefer to play most games with no music at all, and especially this one, because the ambient sounds are so cool. The music is a distraction. Of course, I could just turn it off, but then I lose the audio cues when something is about to attack me. Those DO help, as I often don't know something is coming at me until the music changes to "Battle" mode. I've turned it down to barely audible, but the standard music is still enough to send me to the funny farm.
I haven't looked at the file system yet, but isn't the music in MP3 format? Could I just replace the normal background music file(s) with a "blank" MP3? Does it need to be a certain length? I don't know squat about MP3's. Could someone put one together and post it somewhere or tell me how it's done? |

Personally I like the music. I think I read somewhere though that the limited edition had more music or longer sound tracks - is this true? If it was it may have been a reason for purchasing it. It would also imply that it would be possible to add your own mp3s to the soundtrack.

Yup, its mp3. You can delete them I think, replace them with either heavy metal (great choice) or a blank one. If its black NOTHING will be played if you are not in combat.
If you hate the combat music, place the blank ontop of the combat mp3 files. Very easy. |

Hmm, maybe some Alice in Chains would be good. But seriously...
I'd prefer to have it dead quiet when just walking around (so I can listen to the sound effects), but have the battle music kick in when I'm about to be attacked. As I said, I find the battle music warns me of impending danger first, especially if something comes up from behind or above.
So how do I record a blank MP3?
I have no argument with people who like the music. It's just that for me, it takes away from the reality a bit. It's actually quite pretty, but it's way too repetitive. I swear to you, it's running in my head as I write this. I just hope I don't start to have the same reaction to the NPC voices:
"Go on about your business."
"Hurry outlander, I'm busy."
etc... |

If you have any wav editing software, such as Sound Recorder that came with Windows, just record about 60 seconds of nothing. (Make sure your mic is off and your recording settings are set to something not active...)
Then use MusicMatch jukebox to convert that new .wav file you made into an MP3.
Voila. Blank mp3.
Or, an easier way....
Find a CD that you own that has blank tracks at the end (trying to hide a bonus track) and make one of them an MP3
Personally, I love the music. It is awesome.

You guys didn't read everything I wrote.
YES, I can just turn down the music. Simple enough. But I'd still like the battle music to play when I'm about to be attacked. The answer seems to be replacing the "normal" music MP3 file with a blank one, while leaving the "battle" MP3 alone. All I need to know is how to create a blank MP3.

So is there anyway to add additional mp3 files for more music variety? Or is there a set limit? (i.e. one mp3 file for the battle music, etc)
I like MW's music by the way, it just gets repetitive. |

I'm kinda feeling guilty about my original subject line. The music isn't so much annoying as it is repetitive. As I said before, it's actually quite nice -- for a time. But I'm one of those people who constantly has a song running in his head. After a marathon session, I go to bed with that thing running over and over. I wake up, it's still there. Maybe I need to see a shrink... Just so long as I don't start hearing voices, I think I'm OK. |

I found out by accident that if you just place more mp3's in the specific folder you want (Explore, for example), then it just cycles through ALL of them. No need to rename anything. That's one of the best undocumented features I've ever seen in ANY game! |

I just did some testing on this whole matter. You don't even have to replace the files with blank ones. You can delete ones you don't like, add any files you want to play etc. For instance to the person that likes no sound while exploring but likes battle music. Simply delete (or move to a backup directory) all the mp3's in the Music/Explore directory and none will play..but all the battle music will still play..
