dual class, need advice

Are negative points to only takeing 1 lvl ranger and going fighter for the rest of the levels?

No, not really, but no point to it either. The only benefits you would get from the ranger level would be:

2 extra skill points
3 feats allowing 2 wpn fgtng (but only in light armor)
1 favored enemy
Trackless step (allowing increased stealth - but fighters dont do stealth well)

Ummm .... you had better be playing a race that allows fighter multi classing (or Human or 1/2 elf) or you will be paying a large XP penalty for that one level of ranger.
