Newbie Question regarding whom to pick a fight with... |
|
Well, I just decided to give the game another shot (didn't have enough time to dedicate to it the first time), but there is one BIG problem I'm having with it...
I'm used to playing games like DAOC and BG2 etc., which either pit you against foes who you know you can defeat (BG2), or, like DAOC, you have color indicators on approx. level. MW doesn't have anything like that. Therefore, how do you know how/who to fight and who to avoid like the plague?
Forgive me for a possibly obvious question, but this is something that is really bothering me.

With the monsters, it's a matter of experience. If you're looking to kill people such as bandits, be prepared for lots of reloads (although the old standby, "the deeper you got the tougher it gets", is pretty much true). _________________ =Proud Member of the Non-Flamers Guild=

So it is stictly a trial-and-error thing, eh? Doesn't that get old, or am I missing something? Not trashing or what-not, just trying to understand the appeal of this. I truly am hoping someone can help me get to like that idea so that I can enjoy the game more. |

If you are refering to fighting NPC's it is basicly a no-no in most of the game at first. Don't attack unless you are attacked. It doesn't happen much in the first part of the game, but as you get into the other areas and deeper in the story, you will be fighting a lot. Be patient and there will be no doubt as to who to kill when the time comes. As dte said, save, save, and save again. _________________ =Member of the Nonflamers Guild=

Most of the game uses "Levelled Lists", so the higher your level, the tougher monsters you get. |

Very quickly you'll work out which creatures you can kill and which can kill you - when new ones appear it's safe to say they'll probably be tougher then the ones you've met before. As you progress you'll be able to take on more powerful creatures, but until that point just follow common sense and try to stay out of the way of anything with more teeth than you.
As for NPCs, yes, there are a lot of bad people out there! However, a small cave a short distance from town is likely to contain less powerful NPCs than the depths of a Daedric temple in the middle of the Ashlands.
It is best to save before entering any new dungeon just in case you find yourself out of your depth, or alternatively keep a few Intervention scrolls and invisibility potions around to allow you to escape in short notice. _________________ Charlie Dobbie

Think of it this way: Morrowind was purposely made open ended so that it seemed more like real life and would be a more believable world for you to feel like you could go anywhere in. But in real life, do you really go everywhere, just because you can? No, some areas of town are not smart to go to. So this aspect, and many others, including whom to fight and whom to run from, you must handle it like you would in real life. In real life is it reasonable to think that everyone you meet is someone you could beat? Not unless you have a lot of fight experience or martial arts training, so goes Morrowind. The difference between real life and Morrowind (for most folks who don't end up in prison) is that in Morrowind, you will get a lot of fight experience and after a short while, you will feel like you can go anywhere you want and handle yourself fairly well.
Aside from the "it's more like real life so it's more fun" thing, here is some practical gaming advice: If you have Game of the Year edition, pay attention to the enemy health meter. If they are killing you faster than you are killing them, run. No shame in saving your skin so you can return to take theirs later. If you don't have GotY edition, just keep a close eye on your own health meter, if it is dipping down fast after a hit or two...run. There are plenty of good wild animals to practice on in the areas around and between Seyda Neen, Balmora, etc. General rule of thumb there, if it is bigger than you (Guar, Alit, etc.) run. And like real life, try to learn where the bad neighborhoods are and avoid them until you are higher level. (if you are wandering around and come upon some purple-ish buildings with strange angled architecture, stay far away).
