Yeah, I was told before I even saw Gothic that the controls were awful, but I play planty of console and PC games and, let's face it, anyone who's been playing computer games for more than ten years will have experienced some dire control schemes. So I was prepared for Gothic, and found that the controls weren't all that bad after all (still pretty bad , but not close to the disaster I'd been led to expect).

I do think they should have started from scratch for Gothic 2, though. Glad to see they are doing so for Gothic 3. It's not that I would dislike a console-style control method, I could live with that just fine - but whatever approach they take, it should be easy and intuitive to control my in-game persona right from the start. Gothic 1 & 2's controls were "OK once you got used to them," and that's not really good enough.

I find that interesting, I really enjoyed the control scheme that Gothic 1 and 2 employ. Granted it took about half an hour to get comfortable with, but becomes very rewarding. In fact, I can't think of a single game where I enjoyed the controls more.
That being said, I do not really play consoles and often struggle with the setups they have in place. I don't buy a game to watch, I pay for an interactive experience. The vast majority of games fail miserably in this area. The Gothic series has come the closest to offering a truely interactive and immersive experience that I have been able to find. I think that has already been stated though, but I bothers me when people harp on the controls because they want to watch a video game movie, rather than play the game.

I love the gothic control scheme, and I don't like console games in general, but gothic is diffrent , after a bit of playing I found the controls easy and rewarding....,I didn't like simialr control schemes , like for instance in fable TLC, the controls there were annoying.
I guess to each is own

Agreed. I loath console RPGs, and I loved gothic II's control scheme
