2005 in Review @ RPG Codex

RPG Codex takes their annual, take-no-prisoners stroll down memory lane with 2005: The Year in Review:
After the unfortunate end of Black Isle Studios, many people were quite distraught because two promising projects from Interplay's RPG development arm were canned. Therefore, a lot of people were happy when most of the BIS team reformed as Obsidian Entertainment. All the cool features and storylines promised in the aborted games for Interplay--surely they'd be back in the fantastic and innovative games that Obsidian would make once it was free of Interplay?

The short answer is: no. Despite being unburdened of Interplay's incompetence, Obsidian now had to deal with the issues of being an independent developer with no funds. So, they relied on the connections they'd made during their BIS days and announced... Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. Okay, so they'd be stuck with a shitty engine making a console game that was a sequel to one of the most bland and uninspired games in years. Still, there was the potential to make something of it, right?

I agree with pretty much everything he said in that article, and I couldn't find anywhere where he bashed gothic as the poster above claims.

Although I don't really know what an RPG game is I suppose, my first one was probably Fallout and that's one of my favourite games of all time, and I really loved al the IE games from Bioware and BIS/IPLY. So I guess I can't call myself a real RPG player but I still look forward to The Witcher, DA, NWN2 and games like this that he didn't really think was RPGs.

The only real RPG computer games I can think of are the Ultima series and i've never played any of those.

The article is worthless. They want to be different so badly that they just make fun of everything that's popular.

Why do I picture this guy as some curmudgeon who wont be happy unless companies start releasing node-based crpg's with no automapping where you have to hand-draw maps on graph paper and keep your own notes? That being said, the general point of his article is true; the state is PC role-playing games is pretty bad right now, but not as gloomy as might appear. I'm more disappointed in the incredibly low number of titles hitting the shelves right now, and I'm basically out of stuff to play once I finish Sacred Underworld.

However, the thing that bothered me about his article is he dismisses a half-dozen or so games before THEY'VE EVEN BEEN RELEASED, and that's simply not fair. I say lets wait until the games are released, then we can discuss whether or not they are any good.

My biggest complaint with the article, is the use of personal attacks!! I don't care whether you like or hate people such as Cleve Blakemore, there is NO place for libel in an RPG news site.

That's modern gaming "journalism" for you.

I was a "Gaming journalist" myself for quite some time. Though I wasn't like him...I was a positive person who posted constructive criticism and showed no bias. The readers loved me. The elitists running the website did not.

The guy who wrote this is living in his mother's basement, dreading the sunlight and downloading midget pr0n. He isn't worth your time.

Not all gaming journalists are like that (atlhough I must admit I know several of them who are).

It's people like the writer of this article that give GOOD gaming journalists a bad reputation!

Mixed among all the crap was this little bit of wisdom:

"But nevertheless, publishers hungry for a Blizzard-sized hit without Blizzard-sized investment blindly go after generic and lackluster action RPGs. Meanwhile, the market for traditional RPGs--which exists, damn it--goes hungry because nobody's bothering to make games in that vein. And when they do, they still cop out to this assumed desire for action RPGs by "streamlining" the combat to make it more "immersive"--and probably "epic", too. It used to be that the trend in RPGs was to move away from turn based games and towards real time combat. In what is perhaps an extension of that trend, it seems everyone just wants to make story light, action heavy games that get further and further away from the games that RPGers want to play."

Seems like a fair summary of the state of the genre, if I do say so. It's amazing the Codex chimps could put together a complete sentence, let alone something reasonably sensible. Credit where credit is due, I suppose.

Sorry. No pearls of wisdom in this oyster.

Correct. Most modern game journalism biasly praises games without listing any faults, and most of the time have numerous feature errors and misconceptions.

May I inquire what this clearly retarded observation is based on? Unless, of course, it wasn't meant to be taken seriously and you were simply practicing talking out of your ass, in which case, carry on.
