RPGDot Weekly Roundup #1

Greetings,

welcome to the first RPGDot weekly newsletter. This is another free service from our site, and we are truly overwhelmed by the number of subscriptions we received so far. We will try to make the reading worthwhile, adding more than just a summary of the news from the recent week. Much will depend on your feedback, of course. The more we know about the things you like to read, the more we can deliver them. If you have suggestions, please mail them to us and we will take your ideas into consideration.
We also ask you to give us some time to make the best out of this newsletter. It will take some issues before we have put together our regulars, and some things may change over time. This is an ongoing experiment, but we certainly hope you will already enjoy the first issue.

Regards,
Rendelius

Newsbit of the Week: Morrowind Movies

If you haven't done so already, have a look at the Morrowind movies over at belgian site Spelletjesgarnaal
. They aren't of high quality, but for the first time, you see what character generation will look like in the game - and how a dungeon hunt will be.

Some word about character generation: The amount of freedom you will find in this process is simply amazing. Some people feared that Morrowind will be more of an action game than a roleplaying game - but from what you see in these movies, there is no reason to be fearful. Graphics do look stunning, and the world will be huge. Morrowind is something to look forward for sure. US release date is still April 2002, the localized versions in Europe will be available in June.

A collection of other noteworthy newsbits:

Behind the scenes - News hunting

Have you ever wondered how we hunt for news? How do we collect 25+ newsbits a day - some of them unique and not seen anywhere else?

Well, it takes a lot of time to get them onto the site. At the moment, four people are scanning the net for notable newsbits every day. Moriendor, Myrthos, Garrett and me. Each of us has a set of sites we visit - ranging from game specific sites, developer sites to general gaming news sites. Whenever we got time, we browse these sites for newsbits and add them to our database.

The second source of news are amils we receive from other sites, developers and publishers. They inform us about features they have on their sites, send us material or press releases. We sort them out and put them up as soon as possible.

And then there is you - the visitors. Most of you browse other news sites as well, and if they find something we haven't put up yet, the send us a short note about the feature.

All in all, I would say that we spend about 6-8 man hours a day just hunting and editing news. The result is the most complete RPG news coverage you can find. And since our newsbits are categorized, we build a unique database of game inormation every day. Right now, we have nearly 7000 newsbits in the database, and whenever you want to know something about a certain game, you can be sure that RPGDot has the best collection of links out there.

Next week, I will give you some insight in how we organize the database and how you search it effectively. For today, I just hope you enjoy our first newsletter.

Quite impressive, isn't it? I doubt any other site would be able to present you this amount of information - and we do that for nearly every CRPG out there. You can use the links to go to the appropriate newsbit - and from there to the article on the net.

What's up? - games to look forward to:

This is the release list for March to May - as you can see, great times ahead for RPG fans. Morrowind isn't listed here, because the official release date for the US isn't set yet (rumors say it will be April), but the european distributor has it listed for June 2002. So: yes, for the US, you'll see Morrowind within the next 90 days...
