Gothic. I know it was a long time ago, but I bought this game when it first came out in the states and there had been NO coverage of it at all. I was amazed at how great a game it was. Also, I had low expectations for Disciples II, but it turned out to be my favorite turn-based strategy game ever. |

Baldurs Gate 2 - like Val, I hadn't heard of the game before, adn it blew me away ...
And Warlords BatlleCry - I hadn't really heard a thing about the game, until I played some demo from a magazine, and now I am a fan fo life ... |

My most pleasant surprises -
The Secret of Mana (NES - Probably the first RPG I’d ever played, there were three characters in the game and I played my first time through with my best friend and his brother, was loads of fun)
Warcraft: Orcs and Humans (The first game I ever played on CD-ROM)
C&C Red Alert (My previous computer wasn’t good enough to play the original C&C, so this was my first non-fantasy RTS)
Heroes of Might and Magic (First Turn-based strategy)
Doom/Doom 2 (For obvious reasons)
Baldur’s Gate (First CRPG)
Planescape: Torment (Still my favorite game of all time)
Baldur’s Gate 2 (How cool were the conversations between NPCs in your own party? Only PS:T had that before)
Might and Magic 7 (Never played 6, but this was just a really fun game)
Gothic (Lead me to this website)
GTA 3
Honorable mention goes to Fallout, I had heard a great deal about it ahead of time, so there was no surprise, but I can give it credit for simply living up to the hype.
Sadly those are the only times I can remember were I was truly pleasantly surprised with what I got. And on that note did anyone buy Republic the Revolution? Innovative and unique gameplay?!?! My big somewhat shapely behind!!! |

In order of appearance:
Fallout (I d/l ripped version off of some warez site while at school and fell in love it it so much that I since bought at least 5 Fallout and F2 CDs)
Counter-Strike (I'm not a great fan of FPS, but this game possibly wasted the most hours of my life--nothing like brains over brawns  )
Anarchy Online (I was not ready for what MMORPGs had to offer to me)
Gothic (heard about it on this site, but it still blew me away like nobody's business)
Majesty (picked up the Gold version for like $10 and wondered why this game wasn't compared to sliced bread?!)

I loved that game...along with Dragon Warrior those are my two favorite games. Up untill the MMORPG era. |

The Legend of Mana was the sequel, but I do not believe that it was ever released in the US. |

Hitman: Codename 47. It may have some weird controls, but it's still fun!

I was really impressed with Hitman but Hitman 2 wasnt quite as challenging as the first because you could save anywhere. Another thing about Hitman 2 is if I screwed up I would usually just start running through the level with guns blazing and still win

That's why you set it a higher difficulty. I like Hitman 2 more than Hitman, but I was expecting it to be great.
