RPGDot Feature: Eschalon: Book 1 Interview |
|
We had the opportunity to chat to Basilisk Games about their recently-revealed old-school indie cRPG, 'Eschalon: Book 1', that generated quite a bit of interest. Here's a snip:

RPGDot: Can you give us a summary of Eschalon: Book 1 and the gameplay it will offer? When you say, "designed to feel like the great RPGs of the past", what does this mean to you?

Thomas Riegsecker: When we started this project, we begin by replaying a lot of classic cRPGs (mostly from the mid '80s to the mid '90s) and we took note of key features that we wanted to incorporate into our game, such as the open-ended exploration model of the Ultima and Might & Magic series, the stat-heavy mechanics of the Wizardry series, and the turn-based gameplay featured in nearly every RPG of that era. We also noticed that these classic cRPGs didn't always take themselves so seriously; they weren't always as dark and drama-laden as modern RPGs try to be. These are just a few of the design elements we are trying to incorporate into the Eschalon series.
Read it all here. We also have an exclusive new screenshot:

Thanks for asking my question (if it wasn't already a question of yours). Good interview, on both ends. I like how he basically says it like it is with little or no fluff and explains things without being very ambiguous. That makes me want to play a game a lot more than fluff, nonsense, and hypocrisy the big guys spout at every opportunity to create hype.
The thing I like best about this game so far is the upgradeable minimap. That was a great thing about wiz 7 (and also AO somewhat). Not to say all the rest doesn't sound great.
The best thing about all these independent games being made is that we are finally getting the rpg genre back, in a way in that all “rpg” fans can be happy about. The older stupid game loving idiots of the early to mid 90's can finally play good rpgs instead of whining on forums bitterly. And the young hippies can have their super rpgs with all the flash and pomp they love. Or they can be smart and classy and play the good games with us. _________________ Vegitarian is the Indian word for lousey hunter. |
