When you drop item(s) into chests, will they stay there forever?

Only if the chest was empty. The chests with random loot respawn a month after you used them first, so items in it will be gone.

any houses that you've "cleared" of all inhabitants will be safe to drop all your loot in.

Use the floor!

I'm rather paranoid after losing a full set of Alchemy gear and a ton of ingredients from a box. Nowadays I tend to leave stuff on the floor, or on a shelf or table.

After one of the Warrior's Guild missions in Balmora, a rather nice house ended up, ahem, unoccupied. I now keep all my stuff in there - it has a bed, a table, two chairs, various crates (to put things *on*), a free standing shelf unit and lots of floor space. It's rather littered about now...

Simple:

Don't put your stuff *IN* anything. It won't disappear due to item respawns if it's not in a box/crate whatever.

Leave your stuff all over the floor. Find a house in Balmora with an accessible roof and cover it with scores of swords, piles of potions, stacks of scrolls, billions of books and an array of armour. Find a hill somewhere in the wilderness and just leave your stuff lying all over the place.

Don't worry, no-one will steal any of it. (Disclaimer: at least with the current patch they won't, who knows about the future?)

Thanks for the reply. I've read about not using chests but wondered about the stealing. This is off topic from this thread but i haven't seen the answer elsewhere--I can't effectively taunt/intimidate scottilde or members of the (can't remeber name but it's the antidrow anti empire group). I've effectively killed off the group in balmora but when collecting the "bloodbath" reward the soldiers attacked me. Will i mess up plot threads by killing these people?
