combat system confusing

ok, i know the basics of combat (hitting wasd) but uh just a couple quick questions about it.

A. how do i get out of auto-target and how do i toggle targets to attack?
B. why is it sometimes two hits will kill something and yet it takes 10 hits to kill the same thing sometimes?
C. wtf is the point of stealth, i missed the guy's spiel about it
D. i'm level 4 and have spent almost all my learning skills on strength, and yet i get my ass handed to me by skeletons, field roaches, and usually any packs of 2 or more monsters (EVEN those wasp thingys)
E. what benefits you more, pumping skill points in whatever weapon you're using, or in strength? is crossbows worth pumping points into?

ANY help is GREATLY appreciated. thx alot.

a.no idea what the hell is auto target i play with gothic 1 controls.
b.when u enter charcter screen there is a list of on the right with a weapon a rank and a precentage that precantage is your ability to land a heavy blow which means that u do more damage find a trainer and up it the weapon isn't everything.
c.u can sneak on sleeping opponets like scavangers and shadowbeast animals that r awake can smell u u can also sneak on people but only if thier backs r toward u pretty useless skill in my opion.
d.see b strengh is'nt everything also level 4 is pretty low and skeletons r tough oppents work on your combat skills, don't take on whole packs of critters try to lure one away when possible kill it .
to lvl 4 bloodflies (those wasp thingies ) are dangrous in a group take em apart one at a time

Like cptmaxon said, you sometimes land critical hits which will kill a target much quicker.
It's like stabbing a person through the gut compared to stabbing them through their heart.

Leveling up is pretty easy. So it's not that important to spread your points out the 'right' way.
But you'll eventually figure out that upping your skill is more important than upping your actual str or dex.

Disable Gothic 1 controls and try the alternative combat system.

In case of a 'normal' hit only your weapon and the opponentīs armour are relevant. If you make a critical hit your Str is added.
