Gamers with a high speed Internet connection may purchase an Irth Online access key to play the game online, and gamers using a dial-up connection may purchase the game either on CD-ROM (two disc set) or on a DVD (discs are not available at retail stores). I was a beta tester for the game and sorry to say, but the game is far from ready to be released. The game is still in an early beta state(lots of empty space in the game, bugs, and other problems), and now they are asking people to be paid beta testers. This is a disturbing trend these days but I won't fall victim to it and will warn others about it. Irth Online is similar to like what Horizons and Rubies of Eventide were like when they were released(both were released way too early before they were ready). Graphics are fairly poor, the game is just not worth so high a monthly fee even if it were not in an early beta state. I couldn't see paying more than 10 bucks per month for it even if it was in a state to be released.
I really wanted to like the game, as I prefer skill based systems rather than class based. Right now there are no good skill based mmorpgs out there(that don't have poor graphics) where pvp is optional. Its an untapped market out there.
In closing, I'd say maybe check back in 6 months and see if things have improved significantly. Maybe then it would be worth trying as the game does have potential despite poor graphics. Right now though I definitely can't recommend it.

Your post was remarkable in that my sentiments are almost identical Hulk. I too was so eager to play a 3D skill based MMOG and excitedly joined the Irth beta.

There was a game called Wish that had so much potential which was cancelled so Irth was to fill that void.

I truly hope Magic Hat's play-to-beta-test scheme works because this game could be good someday. It is simply still in Alpha or early Beta depending on your criteria. MMOGs are notoriously known for being made or broken on release. 100,000 people are not going to suddenly say "Hey, I think I will subscribe to (Horizons, Planetside, SWG, Everquest, Anarchy Online,etc.) again!"

It does not matter how many improvements or additions to gameplay you make. The current MMOG market is ruled by the first impression. People may go back to old games they quit and new people still join old games but we are talking about tens and hundreds, not the thousands needed to be profitable.
