When should I take the fire mage test?

I've joined the monastary, am a novice, and have done all quests for the fire mages around the monastary. I've done a few quests around the city, did some hunting, and am now level 6. Should I level more before taking the fire mage test? Will I be at a disadvantage if I take it now? Will I be even able to complete it on my own?

Any tips are welcome.

Also, where can I find Ignaz? I've run all around the city multiple times looking for him, but can't find him anywhere.

It all depends. Once you become a member of one of the factions, you can't run quests for the others, so if you want to maximize your exp, do as many quests as you can and then become a magician. Ignaz is just at the back of the blacksmith shop in the harbor area. Enter the harbor and turn left.
