My wish list is growing by the day. The only sad part is I can hardly play any of them :< Married, work full time, an 18 month old, one on the way, and going back to grad school. Where can I satisfy my RPG addiciton? |

I can't say, that Underworld 1, was my first CRPG game, but it was the first game, which really showed me the atmosphere of a live 3D fantasy world in front of my eyes, instead of I had to imagine the world my self from a lot of texts or static ascii graphics.
To explore the unknown with your own eyes as the window into the fantasy world, is for me a great experience in any CRPG. Not many CRPG's actually fulfill this today, not even with todays far better tools. BG2 f.eks. was a good game for many reasons, but the exitement for atmospheric exploring the world was immense reduced with the bird's eye view. The whole thing is turned more over to a RTS game with a great overview IMHO.
Ofcourse it's a matter of temperament, what you prefer in a CRPG.
But to play in a fantasy world, is to get as close to it as you can, and nothing like the 1 person (or close to that) brings a better melting of fantasy and reality! |

I do like the new 3D graphics engines. Nothing like dodging something flying out of your monitor. I know we have all caught ourselves doing it! That is definately something you lose in an overhead view when you start pulling back to much. I think I still got this effect in a close up third person view like Ultima 9. Your never going to feel like that in a Baldurs Gate however! |

I loved UW 1 and 2. The first time I could ever fly in a game. Too few games do that. Proberly a reason why I also loved Daggerfall and Might and Magic. In the first level, I always killed off the goblins, not realising that I could talk with them. Along with U8, Uw1 and Uw2 was my first experience with the Ultima experience, and they were also my first PC games ( Along with Doom and Sam+Max). They would be in my top 5 all time games list.

Sam and Max, that is a blast from the past. That game was hillarious! The main thing I remember from that game was when the bunny went nuts on the evil Dr. and tore his head off only to find out it was a robot thing. Its been awhile since I played that one! |

Sorry but ultima underworld isn't the first first-person perspective game !!!
look about "legend of valour(1992?)", and before "Cybercon III (1991)" and before "Castle Master (1989?)"(much more an adventure game) and i surely forgot some !

Lanael: You right about the "first person view", they started with that already, in the early 80's, and some of them already went real 3D in the late 80's, but without full texturing (No sky ,wall, or floor graphics, just using one colour for most of it). Ultima Underworld (1992) using vector graphic, was the first full textured 3D interactive game I can remember. I'm familiar with cybercon III, and castlemaster, great games b.t.w., but they were not fully textured. (Cybercon III comes close I must admit). And Legend of Valour (1993), was claiming at it's release that it would be better than the ultima underworld I game, but they were very wrong, the game was too buggy, to even be considered playable. |

But dongeon master was not really "real-time" )
And it's true that Cybercon III was using *flat* polygons : but it was real-time ! and a true RPG !
