Breaking News! Sensational News! Bethesda doing Fallout 3 |

Just in from Bethsoft...exciting, isn't it?
<br><blockquote><em><b>Bethesda Softworks to Develop and Publish Fallout 3</b>
<br>
<br>July 12, 2004 (Rockville, MD) - Bethesda Softworks® announced today that it
<br>will develop and publish Fallout® 3 -- a sequel to the highly popular
<br>Fallout® role-playing game franchise. Bethesda licensed the rights to the
<br>Fallout® franchise from Interplay Entertainment Corp. (OTC Bulletin Board:
<br>IPLY) in a deal that awards Bethesda exclusive worldwide rights to the
<br>Fallout® franchise on the PC, home consoles, handhelds, and other media,
<br>with the rights to develop and publish additional sequels.
<br>
<br>"We're extremely excited about this opportunity and what it means both for
<br>Bethesda and for Fallout fans around the world," said Vlatko Andonov,
<br>president of Bethesda Softworks. "Fallout is one of the great RPG
<br>franchises. Millions of Fallout games have been sold worldwide, and fans
<br>have been eagerly awaiting the release of a Fallout 3 title. Bethesda's
<br>proven expertise in this genre, building on our experience and the
<br>tremendous success we have enjoyed with our cutting-edge Elder Scrolls®
<br>series, will enable us to create the next chapter of Fallout that is worthy
<br>of the franchise."
<br>
<br>Originally released in 1997, Fallout places a player in the role of a
<br>Vault-dweller, who ventures from his secluded, underground survival Vault
<br>into a post-apocalyptic world of mutants, radiation, gangs and violence. The
<br>game has been widely hailed as one of the outstanding role-playing games and
<br>video games of all time with its unique gameplay, style, and setting.
<br>
<br>Commenting on this development, Interplay Chairman and Chief Executive
<br>Officer Herve Caen said, "This is a good agreement for both companies and
<br>for gamers. Although several parties had a high level of interest in
<br>licensing Fallout, we are most impressed by Bethesda's execution of
<br>role-playing titles. Bethesda is an ideal steward of the Fallout franchise."
<br>
<br>Fallout 3 will be developed by Bethesda along with the next chapter of The
<br>Elder Scrolls, both under the direction of Todd Howard, executive producer
<br>of The Elder Scrolls. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind® won every national
<br>and international award of note in 2002, including Game of the Year and RPG
<br>of the Year, and is one of the best-selling games ever released on Xbox.
<br>
<br>"We are overjoyed," said Howard. "Fallout is one of my favorite games, and
<br>we plan to develop a visually stunning and original game for Fallout 3 with
<br>all the hallmarks of a great RPG: player choice, engaging story, and
<br>non-linearity."
<br>
<br>Future announcements about the release of Fallout 3 will be made as work on
<br>the title progresses.</em></blockquote> |

VERY good news, I think. This means that we will see Fallout 3 - and in the hands of Todd Howard, there isn't a lot that can go wrong.
Another extremely pleasing part of the press release is this sentence:
"Fallout 3 will be developed by Bethesda along with the next chapter of The Elder Scrolls, both under the direction of Todd Howard, executive producer of The Elder Scrolls."

While I'm certainly glad that I'll be able to play Fallout 3, I just hope it isn't Morrowind with guns. _________________ If soot stains your tunic, dye it black. This is vengeance.

An unexpected choice, i definetly didnt see this one coming. Daggerfall is definetly one of the best games ever made and morrowind too, though to a much lesser extent than daggerfall. However, as good as DF & MW are, their a totaly different kettle of fish than Fallout and i really have doubts as to wether bethesda have the experience to make a turn based, isometric, non fantasy rpg with a Mature rating/content and strong dialogue. Morrowind & daggerfall were pretty poor in the "copy & paste" style of dialogue that they used. They were also totaly twitch based. Morrowind in particular was lacking in the immersion factor that fallout, and daggerfall deliver. I really have my doubts about this one... Troika would have done a much better job but i guess bethesda have nothing else to do with all the money morrowind brought in. Oh well it could have been worse, silver style or bioware could have got it, so i guess its a compromise and hope for the best. |

Lets see if they include turn based combat ... if not I dont quite see why they picked Fallout. But then managers always seem to think raping franchises is a good idea. |

Interesting news - it would be great if they can pull it off.
But to be honest the prospects are shaky - as the announcement states, they've only licenced the rights to make Fallout games, not purchased the rights themselves. So the Fallout licence itself still resides with Interplay.
So the licence will still get mired in legal red tape when Interplay goes under (and you know they will). The future for Fallout is still far from certain. |

It's not going to be Morrowind with guns, geez
I've played Fallout, I love Fallout. Todd has played Fallout, Todd loves Fallout. Tons of people in the company have played and loved Fallout. If I find out they haven't played Fallout, I will make them People who think we will never progress from Morrowind are going to be in for one hell of a wake-up call. |

Pff, let's hope it will be nothing like Morrowind.
Morrowind was a MMORPG monster killing/xp grinding game, only without the "Massive Multiplayer Online" part - populated by zombie NPCs pulling their dialog lines out of their arses, err, a global dialog lines database, that is. The immersion factor was zero in that game, plus quite a few serious problems with the game mechanics (graphics, animation, physics, balance, etc.). In my university, NO ONE liked, and there were quite a few nerdy technical major people there, trust me.
Apparently, Fallout franchise brought a bad carma to Interplay (the recently deceased), so I hope Bethesda people realise what they're up to. |

Hey Kathode, you're from Bethesda? W00t!
You're up for a noble cause, guys! Please don't screw it, though (you saw what happened to Interplay, mwahahaha ).
Fallout is a holy grail for thousands of people around the globe, it's far more than merely a game. Fallout is not an RPG - RPG genre is Fallout!
Shoddy twitchy games come and gone, but the likes of Fallout, if done right, s stay in the annals of gaming history forever.
P.S. OH BY THE WAY, HERE'S MY SUGGESTION FOR WHAT THE GAME SHOULD LOOK LIKE - it should be 3rd person, isometric view 3d game, with rotation enabled, but preferably without the zoom function (it's not good for anything other than revealing the graphics shortcomings anyway).
AND PLEASE, PLEASE - IT MUST BE TURN-BASED! |
