Gothic brings up an Error During Installation |
|
Everytime I try to install Gothic it says something about an error reading data2.cab. I've had gothic installed before, but had to reformat my PC, and since then I have scratched CD1, and I think this is the cause of the problem. Could someone please be so kind as to send me this file? Just copy it from your cd on to your hard driive and send it to PervPunkSkater@hotmail.com This will be greatly appreciated. I might be able to install if I copy all the files from the cd to my hard drive into one folder, then put in data2.cab if someone can send it to me, and then install from that folder instead of the cd. |

You're right - the reason is a scratch. But it might be just a surface one.
Clean the cd surface very carefully with a soft cloth, and then try to rip the cd with appropriate program(with dunnot-ignore-reading-errors option on). If you're patient enough, you might succed in ripping it without errors(most cd-roms manage to read beyond scratches eventually)
btw, data2.cab is one laaarge file. |

Ok thanks. I've tried cleaning it before installation a few times, but it still brings up errors. What program do I need to rip the cd? |

Well, first, you need to establish how bad the scratch really is..
As for the program, I don't have much experience with ripping ones. My friend tells me cdspace is ok(and it has that option we're looking for); but it's somewhat large(~8Mb)..
If you know how(and you've done it before), you could clean the laser head of the cd-rom on your own; it could help, too. But this one is a longshot, especially if other cds are running smoothly.
Once you start ripping, when the program runs along a bad sector, he will ask you what do you want done(I think). Your task is to click retry. If he reports an error on the same sector more than several times(the more times you retry the better), choose ignore. This way he will fill the sector with random data, but the game could still work if that sector was part of some texture.
The cd that had to many ignored errors could still finish the install process, but the game might not be able to run properly.
As I already said, it is very probable that your cd-rom will eventually manage to read the bad sector. |

Thanks for the help. I managed to get it working and have gothic re-installed and so far ran into no problems while playing it. Thanks very much! |
