SpaceShipOne Wins $10M After 2nd Flight |
|
A stout, star-spangled rocket plane broke through the Earth's atmosphere to the edge of space Monday for the second time in five days, capturing a $10 million prize aimed at opening the final frontier to tourists.

It's always cool to see history in the making. And it's hilarious to see private investors build a space craft that can be towed away by a pick-up truck as opposed to that monstrosity that tows the shuttles around. _________________ Freeeeeeedom! Thank heavens it's summer!

Yeah, but SSOne is a space taxi, not a space big rig. You'd hope you could tow a taxi with more ease than an 18 wheeler.
And as to the x-prize win....
It's not fair! We were so close.... the Da Vinci project would have worked! Canada's craft would have actually earned money from the X-Prize ... instead of spending 20 million to win a 10 million prize.
Oh well. History is history... but I expect that nothing will come of this except some overpriced rich 5 minute tours of space for a very long time. It's not like this technology can be used to deploy full sized private satellites (now, the new micro "Cube" sattelites are another thing) or create a trans-orbital airliner (which could make the flight from California to Japan in a ridiculously short time by leaving orbit, going against the rotation of the earth, and re-entering). _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi

Apparently there is now a $50Million prize for the first private spacecraft in orbit. I know there is more to it than that, but I cant remember the details.
Obviously there are plenty of private satelites in orbit. I will post more info if I manage to find the link again. _________________ IMHO my opinion is humble |

Who will get the franchise on the sick bags?
NASA has the expertise but Virgin has the marketing. _________________ The optimist sees the doughnut.

It's fantastic news all round. The commercialisation of space flight can only serve to improve technology and open new frontiers. I look forward to booking my seat one day...after I figure out how to win the lottery... _________________ Editor @ RPGDot |

I'm waiting for the first soda bottle shaped rocket with a Pepsi logo on it. _________________ Freeeeeeedom! Thank heavens it's summer!
