I received a mail a few days ago from somebody who successfully solved his Gothic crash problems under WinXP. If you have a mainboard with a Via chipset his suggestion might be worth a try.

After 4 hours of searching on the internet, I found something that fixed my problem with Gothic and many other 3d games crashing. A small patch for owners of a VIA based mainboard that (as we're used to from VIA chipsets, I don't know why I fell for a VIA board again...) fixes one of their screwups:
patch
Game is rockstable since I installed this.
People may want to combine this with the VIA 4 in 1 drivers:

I installed these first but they didn't solve my problems. I can't however, be fully certain that you don't need both installed to fix the problem because of this. The VIA 4 in 1 drivers fix a whole truckload of possible problems so it won't hurt anyone to try.
