GameSpot has an interesting article on cancelled games, titled <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/features/6132028/index.html?q=1&tag=gs_hp_flashtop_bg" target="_blank">Heartbreakers</a>. The games covered include Black Isles' Torn and Van Buren, Ultima X Odyssey and more. Here's the intro on Torn:<blockquote><em>When I was discussing the idea of a feature about heartbreaking game cancellations with Carrie, Black Isle's Torn was the first game I thought of, and maybe not even so much for the game itself (I'll explain why in a bit). Torn was supposed to have been an "alternate-medieval" fantasy game that used the "SPECIAL" character development system that the studio first used in its classic 1997 role-playing game, Fallout. You would have gone on an adventure through a fantastic world populated by the elves and dwarves you might expect from this kind of game, but these characters would have had different motivations and roles; in fact, an entire alternate creation theory had been devised for the world.</em></blockquote> |

FASA interactive was working on a shadowrun title for the computer and was 75% complete when they collapsed and Microsoft bought out FASA interactive. Microsoft then scrapped the shadowrun game... |

No Sam and Max, and no Secret of Vulcan Fury? Final recordings of the original Star Trek cast. No Baldur's Gate 3 either?
Yet Torn gets mentioned when even the developers said it wasn't the game they intended. |

I'm not sure anyone was really interested in Odyssey X considering Richard Garriot had nothing to do with it. Most players considered it a long overdue update but their core of UO players were concerned EA would take server attention from the original.
I guess EA is just content with the UO fanbase dwindling to nothing rather than competing with the likes of Sony or Blizzard. Smart thinking actually. Too bad they had to make the decision to cancel it twice.
I also don't know of anyone that was really interested in Torn. The screen shots released were a joke. The concept of no Good or Evil just Law and Chaos wasn't totally original either: its Michael Moorcock. Gygax and Co. wanted to implement the same thing in PnP D&D but you see how far that got.
Jefferson (BG3) is definitely missing from this list. Strange.
What about Full Throttle 2? Is that still no longer in production?
On another note for Sam & Max, the game is (almost) finished and Lucasarts decision to cancel caused such a backlash they stopped any sort of support for it on their website (rather than change their minds, finish it, market it, then release it). |

I'm not 100% sure how those two are related (developer- vs publisher-wise I mean) but LucasArts has laid off *all* internal development teams approximately 1.5 years ago. They only got producers (=supervisors) and clueless (as far as gaming is concerned) marketing/licencing/PR monkeys now.
What's really bad is that the PR monkeys get to dictate the pace of development. The release of SW: Battlefront II and the SWG expansion Trials of Obi-Wan are both scheduled to "coincide" with the release of the DVD version of Episode III (=November 1st).
If past history is any indication then the teams involved in the making of said projects are running on a very tight (if not impossible to meet) schedule as dictated by LucasArts PR (November 1, no matter what).
I'm fairly sure that at least one of the products will stay below expectations with such a fixed deadline (Trials of Obi Wan is bound to be bugged beyond recognition if past experience with Star Wars Galaxies is any indication... Battlefront II, well, I hope they are well ahead of their own schedule to make it happen at least somewhat bug-free on 11/1/ but only time weill tell...). |
