Getting on my nerves, as soon as I get close enough to try and use a spell scroll, he freezes me. Even after the ice melts/falls off of me, I still can't move. What's the deal??

Any fire spell, from a long distance. Repeat until dead.

Fireball works best. Killing the fire golem is more of a pain... I had to learn circle one magic and get ice bolt to do it, since I didn't have about 20 ice bolt scrolls on me... good thing I was a Templar and could do so. Makes me wonder how other 'fighters' beat the flaming bastard...
