Advice Needed

Hi All

I’m hoping for a bit of technical advice.

I’m afraid to say that I have been put in the position of facing a reformat of my pc but stupidly I have lost my “WinXP” disks!!

I am normally really careful to keep these things all in one place and can’t understand where they’ve gone. But the fact that I am usually so orderly has paid off in that I still have a copy of “Win ME” (unopened) from my last machine.

None other than our own CM has very kindly offered to lend me an upgrade disk to take the ME back up to XP, but neither of us know whether this upgrade disk, or XP in general from the US, will be compatible with my ME version from the UK.

Can anyone give me a yes or no on this?

Also…. Wherever my xp disks went, there also went whatever disk it was that must have come with my GeoForce4 graphics card. (never rains but it pours) I can’t remember what came with it as it was so long ago now.

Do you think there would definitely have been a disk with the card out of the box? What would have been on it, just drivers? Would my card be a “plug & play” affair or is my having lost this disk going to be yet another hurdle between me and fixing my spiteful old
rig? (She used to love me.. but now I think she hates me. )

Many thanks
Badger

All I can say is the disc that came with the video card isnt very important. If it had anything other than drivers it would be either A.) Just another crap program or B.) you could probably download it on the Nvidia site. Maybe even a combination of A and B.

I am not lending the xp upgrade, I am giving to him so no issues of license will come into play here. Just wanted to know if any reason he couldn't use it in the UK that anyone knows of.

It shouldn´t be a problem. It will either ask about your location during the installation or retrieve the info from Win98.

I´m more worried about Win98. Do you really need to install it first or is this upgrade just a disguised full version? This would be better.

If you need to install Win98 you could consider to buy a WinXP OEM or SBE (= System Builder Edition) or whatever it´s called in the UK. WinXP Pro SBE costs ~90 EUR in Germany incl. VAT. I guess this translates to about the same in GBP.

Hi all

After over two months of downtime, hair pulling, nail biting and lets be honest.. kicking and screaming, it looks as though my pc is back up and running again.

I wanted to finish this thread by using it to say a big public thankyou to Wulf and to CM, both of whom went above and beyond the call of duty in their efforts to help me out.

Both these kind folk spent a lot of time providing me with invaluable email support (and in CM’s case spoken support on YIM) and were extremely patient while I generally clicked on the wrong buttons and asked silly questions and neither of them is close enough that I can even offer so much as a cup of tea to say thankyou.

So I thought the next best thing (but only just as I make great tea) is to point at them in front of the rest of the forum and say “Look at these two… they’re the tops!”

Thank’s guys

Badger
