Does anyone here come from a happy, functional family? Does such a think actually exist?

edit: Ah, just getting to post that and vote was very therapeutic.

I don't think there's a family in the world that doesn't argue,

Personally, my family was functional, eccentric, but functional

The problem is I get that feeling (above) every time I see them.
I just received an e-mail for my sister that form the first couple sentences sounded like it was going to be an apology then she says, I pretend to know everything but don't know anything, I have a temper, I cause them lots of problems, that everything I'm angry about is all in my head, that I'm the one pushing them away, then she says I'm completely unqualified to watch a small child while immediately after she tries to guilty trip me for not babysitting for her anymore.

A happy functional family? Assuming you mean the family I grew up in then it was reasonably happy and reasonably functional. Nothing to cheer about, nothing big to complain about either.

Of course having a family myself now with two kids I see myself doing some of the things that I once said I never would do to my kids. Sometimes I correct my behaviour in those situations as I think it was wrong then and it is wrong now and sometimes I don't as I feel it is the correct thing to do.
My wife and I am trying to make this a happy and functional family or atleast our perception of it. We are having a reasonable success from where I'm standing, but I might be biased and my children are a tad bit to young to vote

my family is as funbctional as can be. unless one person suddenly qualifies as a family, there will never be a "perfect" family.

as an aside, my immediate family is composed of a mother, a father, and 2.5 children. (the national average. ) technically we're perfect, though there are times i'd love to shove a firecracker up my sister's nose...

The more family members argue, the more they understand each others (provide that the original argument has been resolved)

I have great respect for Dad... partially due to the fact that I'm going to be in need of fast car in a couple years...

Arguments can be resolved?!?! This is the first time I've ever heard of that. Why would someone argue about something if they're willing to eventually back down? So what, do people apologize at the end then? Do we just not argue long enough? When does the apology come after 4 hours? 5? Cause I don't remember ever breaking the four hour mark, not without taking a break to eat or go to the bathroom. And I gotta say if it means I have to continue the argument for more than 3 hours on a daily basis to just may not be worth it, I start to get tired after 3 hour, and I really can't start doing that everyday again. I don't mean three hours every day that would be too draining, I mean about 2 hours most days, three on a bad day.

P.S. After rereading the above, for spelling mistakes, I realized that it could be mistaken for sarcasm, sadly it's not.

We tried, my sister made her cry.

I don't have the money to leave, but when my book is done and published I was thinking maybe New Zealand . (not a joke)
I'm kind of surprised by the vote thus far, most of my friends think that my family is a little more messed up than their's but not by much.

just "rent" a houseboat and go out to international waters.

if the simpson's has taught us anything, it's that international waters is the land that law forgot.

and if you ever run out of food, just become a pirate and steal food off'n a yacht.

As a single parent for 2 kids, well not small kids nowdays, since my daughter is 19 and my son is 17, i have no problems with them, we have democracy in our house, and that democracy is me Also i'm having very warm relations to my own parents and two sisters, so my vote was that first one.

Resolved? Sometimes. Sometimes not. When you are living together you have to compromise. In general it's ok to not agree on every issue as long everybody is ok with that. I can understand someone elses points of view, without agreeing with them. Depending on the issue it stops there or it needs to be discussed further. Any discussion that is aimed to having a winner and a looser is doomed to fail.

Oh wouldn't it be simple if we could all just run away to Hidden Pirate Island (aka... Hong Kong) and live a simple existence of monkey knife fights and booze before noon?
