I liked The Punisher. I've never heard of the comic so I don't care about that. I liked the idea that the hero was nothing special, no ridiculous superpowers or glib lines. He was just a man--nothing more. Just a man who had lost everything--even the desire to live. Nothing more than an empty shell fueled by rage and driven by vengeance... almost a machine.
Bottom line--I like Thomas Jane, I like Rebecca Stamos and I liked the story as much as any action film. I don't care about the comic book or whether the actor had big enough muscles. Comic books are make believe. Very few real people have muscles as big as comic book heroes and the ones that come close never look as good in real life as the artists draw them in comic books. To me, it's extremely unappealing to see a guy whose neck is wider than his head, can't put his arms at his sides, or has thighs so muscular that he's bow legged.
It's not a problem if someone wants to do that to themselves--I say go for it! It takes a lot more dedication to achieve that than most people can muster for anything. I like great development as much as anyone, but really big bodybuilder guys are outside of my range of appeal. |

The movie was fine as a revenge-flick... Jane was fine. Nash should have played Colossus in X2 he was so huge! (The Russian was played by Kevin Nash... aka Diesel for any old timer WWF fan).
However, you'd probably like it less from a story stanpoint if you did know about the comic.
In the comic Frank Castle snapped because his family was gunned down in a mindless, non-personal drive-by mob shoot out. It was senseless violence that meant nothing to the participants in it.
It was the senselessness of it... holding his wife bleeding out in his arms ... a day off for a picnic in central park ruined... that got him believing that sometimes the police couldn't do what needed to be done.
By making it a personal 'mob' hit it subtly shifts the characters motivations from "Making sure this doesn't happen to anyone else" (a very violent and borderline psychotic Batman) to "They will all PAY for this!".
End result is the same... gun down anyone that is too powerful for the police to go after. It's just... different... somehow.
I don't know if that makes sense.
