Why does everyone hate me?

I just started playing a few days ago. I can't walk past anyone without getting some sort of rude comment. From what I understand, my speachcraft skill (or lack of) can play a part in this. What other attributes contribute to my general social acceptability? I'm supposed to get a key from a guy in Balmora for the thieves guild, but he will barely talk to me. My feelings are really hurt. Maybe I'll just go be a hermit.

Sorry I was thinking about something else. Just remember you are an outlander and nobody will like you so don't worry. You reputation will get better as you complete quests for certain guilds. But all in all everyone will not like you but later you will be powerful that you could kill all of them so keep that in mind. I hope that is what you were asking.

As with the key, nobody has to like to complete this quest. You are a thief! use your skills or go train them til you get better and try again.

It's all about personality. And the clothes you wear. And your gender to a lesser degree. And your race.

If you're a male argonian in rags with a 30 personality don't expect a welcome wagon. If you're a female dark elf in an exquisite dress with a 75 personality or more they'll be falling all over themselves trying to get your attention. If you have a 90 personality with any race all you'll get are compliments unless they really, really hate you.

Also check to see if your personality number is not white, if its red or yellow you have a disease that needs curing. I got Ash-Chancre, I got blessed and cured, but I didn't buy a potion to restore my personality. And I met people and they had a friendly rating of 30, and no-one would speak to me. In the end I paid the woman in the Thieves guild to talk to me, I paid more than the mission was actually worth!

But then I took the potion, and went to 40 peronality, and people had a 50 rating when I met them, and they were willing to talk. I'm also a male Nord, and every Dark Elf I come across hates me..so it depends on that too.

Your reputation also plays a big part in the comments/reactions. Right now, I'm pretty much hated in Telvanni areas. I get wonderful comments like "Nice clothes, too bad you'll die in them". Conversely, if I go to my friendly mages guild, they act like I'm the hero of legend that I really am.

It's amazing how many factors go into how you are treated.

To snawer the original question -- yes, it's that you're an outlander (talk to some people about this and they'll explain it to you). Once you develop a reputation and association with certain groups, not everyone will hate you.

*** small spoiler ***

It's somewhat disappointing that not all factors have been taken into account. I've completed all the Hortator quests, but some of the House people still react poorly to me. You'd think that after being named that House's questing hero and champion, they'd change their attitudes (at least a little bit).

Yeah nothing like saving a village of Ashlanders from starvation, being thanked as their saviour and then being told 'If I liked you better' when you ask them a basic question...
Still say some nice things about them and they love you.
Hmm saving you from starvation or saying you have nice pants...

It is possible that you're just a socially-retarded, smelly person...

Yup, that's what I was going to suggest.

Check your deodorant.
