I recently purchased the title, GOTHIC from Best Buy, after having an unsuccessful attempt at playing the demo. Upon starting the game, the demo would give me an access violation, causing the game to freeze before even entering. So I decided to buy the final, thinking all glitches would be fixed.

I was wrong.

So, I am coming to you to see if you can fix this problem or know of a solution. Paying $30 for a softdrink coaster doesn't cut it for me.

My system specs:

Windows 98 SE
Pent III 700
Geforce 2 MX 32 megs ram
512 megs D Ram memory
Sound Blaster AWE 64
20+ gigs of HD space.
4X CD Rom

As you can see, my computer more than meets the recommended requirements.

I shall await any responses from Good Samiritans, or otherwise...

Itīs most likely a driver issue. The only critical component is the SB64.

Are the drivers and the DirectX up to date?

Edit the gothic.ini and disable music and sound.

It didn't work. I went to http://www.download.com and I have sound drivers dated april of 99 while there's goes back to 98.

I've killed all "video watching" in the .INI folder as well as sound, and it still is happening. This is a serious issue, and it doesn't seem to have an apparent fix...

Note: Right before I get the Access Violation, a Black DOS window opens up, labeled: Gothic 1.08j

then I get hit with the Access Violation...

What about the DirectX and the detonator driver? Are you running overclocking utils?

Btw, close every possible program.

I don't think it is a driver issue, too many ppl have this problem! An AMD or a Pentium, a Geforce or a Radeon, Win 98 or XP or 2000, whatever system you have the access violation pops up!
There are only 2 thing to do: wait for a working patch or sell the game.

Hey all. I started getting an exception with MSS32.DLL starting at some point into the game. It happens randomly, but now it happens whenever I talk with this named peasant in the New City. It isn't Horatio (thank goodness too). I can get by the error by not continuing to talk to him, but I have no idea if I will miss a critical part of the game.

My system:
AMD Athlon XP1800+
Leadtek Ti500
512 MB PC2100 DDR
SB Audigy
Abit KR7A mobo
80 GB 7200 RPM RAID0
Pioneer 16x DVD Slot
Plextor 24/10/40 CDRW
Windows 98se
DirectX 8.1
nVidia 23.10

As you can see I have the latest hardware and software one can have, so I doubt it's a driver problem other than the MSS32.DLL. Anyone know what the file is tied to? OS or game? I tried to find info on it at Microsoft's knowledge base, but couldn't find anything. All my errors are tied to the file and I always crash with the same error.
