PC Gamer Rejects Gold Farming Ads @ Next Generation |
|
Next Generation and Terra Nova are covering the somewhat startling announcement by PC Gamer that the magazine will no longer carry advertisements from gold farming agencies such as IGE.
Secret wars. We all fight them occasionally. And just like when Dr. Doom fought the Beyonder and temporarily stole his powers, or when Chuck Norris continued to roundhouse kick his way through Vietnam well into the ’80s, recently, the editors of PC Gamer have been embroiled in a secret battle of our very own. The enemy? MMO Gold Farmers.

Lately, 'gold farming' companies such as IGE and Power Leveling — companies whose business is the accumulation and (potentially illicit) real-world sale of virtual MMO property, including gold, in-game items, and characters — have begun running ads in magazines like ours.

For the record, PC Gamer’s official stance on these types of companies is that they are despicable: not only do they brazenly break many MMOs’ End-User License Agreements, but they all-too-often ruin legitimate players’ fun.

Yep, I was actually pretty pissed when I was thumbing thru my just-arrived issue of PcGamer a couple issues ago, just scannning it and I saw a gold ad. I thought it was a parody at first, I didnt believe what I was seeing, but closer scrutiny told me it was definitely real, telltale bad english and all. More than really pissed, I was actually very disappointed more than anything.
Looks like they got my caps-riddled email, and about 6 zillion others, I'm glad they made the call.
The even better news, it seems that perhaps in an effort to stem the unrest among us loyal readers, they have actually reformatted the 'zine as well. Also, Desslock was relegated to some skimpy little want-ad size columns there for a while, he's back to a full page column. There seems to be a bit more actual content in general. It also seems like theyre sorta taking a step back from the sorta ridiculous juvenile humor direction the magazine seemed to be heading in, which i truly loathe.
Now if they can just skip the absolutely trite and tiresome anti-nazi and anti-french comments they feel they must make when covering WWII games, it'll really be a full-fledged step in the right direction. There's even a reader in the letters section this month, bragging on and on about how many horrible nazis he's killed in games and how valorous he is for doing so, it's just ridiculous.
Yes, it takes alot of guts and wit to announce that you really do hate Hitler, and enjoy slaughtering his universally hated regime a half century in the grave, from the dangerous vantage point of your pc desk. Get over it already _________________ “Then away out in the woods I heard that kind of a sound that a ghost makes when it wants to tell about something that's on its mind and can't make itself understood, and so can't rest easy in its grave, and has to go about that way every night grieving.”-Mark Twain |

This is all fine and good, but I find it kind of funny they're wanting to take credit for it, since every letter I've ever seen in a gaming magazine complaining about offensive ads has been replied to with a lecture on how the editors have no control over the ads whatsoever. |
