i found a directx8.1 patch for Win XP only - i am still running Win98 - does a patch for this version exist, too ?

Not that I know of, I´ve heard rumours that there are problems in 98 as well. Also the latest patch seems to have removed a few crash causes. I´d say get the 1.12 patch and check if it helps.
