It would be a rather impressive marketing ploy if they have been sitting on it all this time, just putting the final touches on it, and then quietly posted on their main page "Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has gone gold.  " in the middle of next month.
Think of the scrambling the CRPG news sites would do. Fans would go nuts.

I would go crazy. I am sure they just made this date up. These retailers do this all the time.
Gamestop shows it as December!
