How in the World do you pick things up in Gothic?

I'll see a torch or something lying around and there is nothing I can do to pick it up! The action ket does nothing! And why can't you map the mouse buttons in order to assign actions to them? Thanks!

hold LMB(left mouse button) and press the forward key

There is a bug in the keyboard binding setup.

If you have problems doing normal things (like picking up stuff). Try reseting your bindings. I had this happen to me several times after messing with the key-bindings too much.
