Interplay: Herve's MMORPG Plans Inch Forward

Herve Caen's desire to play with FOOL (Fallout Online) and the MMORPG market crawled just a little closer to reality with the release of Interplay's <a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/12-23-2004/0002680283&EDATE=" target="_blank">3rd quarter 2004 results</a>. In among the multi-million dollar losses was the news that Interplay had signed a publishing deal with <a href="http://www.majorem.com/" target="_blank">Majorem</a> for their massively-multiplayer RTS <a href="http://www.ballerium.com/" target="_blank">Ballerium</a>. Not two months ago, Ballerium was put on hold due to a lack of funds - although it will be interesting to see if Interplay can actually find any money to get it going again. Here's a stirring snip from Herve:<blockquote><em>Commenting on the earnings and the Majorem agreement, Interplay Chairman <br>and Chief Executive Officer Herve Caen said, "We continue to operate in a <br>difficult transition period. This alliance with Majorem represents an <br>important first step in executing the Company's strategy announced earlier <br>this year to migrate to the massively multiplayer online gaming market, not <br>only with our own properties like 'Fallout' but also with third party content. <br>'Ballerium' has generated strong buzz online already, and we look forward to <br>leveraging this title."</em></blockquote>

MMORTS? This is a VERY strange move for a cash straped company. Didn't Herve do his homework? All MMORTS before this failed to generate enough revenue or even leave the development phase! 10six and Sovereign are good examples of this (or only examples, if i'm not wrong).

Without meaning to insult Majorem, noone would sign with Iplay unless they were desperate. So Herve signed Ballerium because he wants to get into MMOs and noone else will touch his company -- and Ballerium signed with Iplay because they were the only ones interested and they were already effectively closed, anyway (possibly for good reason as you pointed out).

Even though Iplay was basically no employees, they still had an income of $900,000 this quarter (presumably ongoing sales of BG:DA2 plus the license they sold) but they still lost $1.5 Mil, meaning they spend $2.4 Mil on something or other. The sales can only go down because they have no new products coming on stream, so I doubt Majorem will get anything out of this, unless Herve finds some sucker to bankroll it.
