Can't learn lockpicking, please help!

Well this is certainly frustrating.

I have read all the FAQ's I could find on this game, but none of them have mentioned this bug. I can find no way learn lockpicking from Thorben. I have talked to Gritta and Matteus many times but have never been given any dialog about her owing him money or whatever. Thus, I cannot get on Thorben's good side.

Eventually I gave up on that idea and decided to try and get into the Thieves Guild so I could learn it from them. So, I helped Rengaru and talked to the guys in the Tavern, then did all the quests they gave me. However, instead of telling me to meet the thieves' guild leader, the barkeep tells me something about Daron's chest and then won't talk to me anymore (I can't remember the exact wording, because it doesn't show up in my quest log, and he won't repeat himself). Obviously, since I cannot pick any locks, I can't complete this task anyways.

Is there some other way to just give myself the lockpicking skill? At this point I don't care if I have to cheat to get it. Alternatively, does anyone know how I can get into the thieves guild, because I would still like to do that so I can learn pickpocketing as well.

Any help would be appreciated.

That was the first thing I tried. He still says he doesn't know if he can trust me enough.

You´re probably the first in this forum to have this bug. You can get every skill you want with the Character Helper. If your German is good enough.

I have same problem. No lockpicking and the cests will remain closed to me . After you become a cityzen and havent done the Matteo and Gritta quest, you cannot learn it from noone? So how can I cheat?

Lockpicking is not very useful in my opinion. You will get enough money from loot.

No! Just say that you wont tell the militia about him! If you dont do anything the quest wont be finished?

You can either throw Rengaru in jail, and get in the sewers the hard way. You'll need to kill Attilla for his key, but the thieves will still learn you their skills. Or you can let him go, you'll need to do several others quests after that, but Attilla will just give you the key.

Finally I know what happened, because the same thing happened to me. The problem is you must either way solve all the three quests in the "thiefs" way or betray one or more so they get busted.
It happened to me like this:
I let Rengaru and Halvor the fish dealer go away, but didn't want to give the package to Nagur, because Baltram was involved in the Ring of Water. I gave Baltram his package and thought everything was fine. Wrong! While Nagur's quest was still open I should have gone to the militia to get him in jail, now with the quest failed I can't do it anymore. Attilla won't show up and I've lost my change to get in the thieves' guild, just have to insert the key myself then.

If i remember correct you are allowed to join the guild even if you betray the fishmonger, rengaru and give the package to akil and kill attila.

Yes that's correct, but you must get them into jail! If you forget that, the dialogue option will dissappear once the quests fails and Attilla won't come. Either do those quests right or go to Andre to get them in jail.
