Arx won't run

Well, I've played through Morrowind, Gothic, Arcanum, DD demo, Gothic II demo (with that excellent translation to English), and am now scouting around for a new game. Thought I'd try out the Arx demo, but, although it installed fine, when I click on the icon to run(either using the desktop icon or in the program file) nothing happens. I saw one reference to this when I did a search here on the forum, and ATI cards were said to be a possible problem. But that doesn't apply to me, I've got a Geforce3 Ti200. Also, my OS is Windows XP.

I'd sure appreciate any suggestions, since I'm at a loss...

Ok, try some of these:

- Have you installed the latest patch 1.15?
- Install the latest graphics & sound drivers.
- Reinstall DX 8.1 again.
- Install a unified EAX driver.
- Uninstall Arx and reinstall.

Please also post your exact HW config for futher investigation!

Thanks for the quick reply.

Well, I installed the patch and now when I click to run the game I get the message "no disc inserted"....??? Obviously acting like I was playing the full version, which I"m not...you did mean for me to download the patch even though it's the demo, didn't you?

Re-install it please and check the driver issues

As far as system info:

Dell 4400 1.7ghz
512 ddr ram
geforce3 ti200
santa cruz turle beach sound
WinXP

Installed latest drivers, hmmm, about 2 months ago. Wouldn't those be new enough?

Also, what exactly is an EAX unified driver? I'll be happy to get it but what does it do?

Thanks again.

Well, your sound card may be the source of the problem. Since it is not soooo common, check for the latest drivers.
Does it support EAX? If so, search the web for a unified driver (a driver commonly used for ALL EAX boards).

Other things you can check:
In the sound board config: disable EAX

Try to change the desktop resoution adn the color depth also and reboot before trying to start the demo.

Other than that, the drivers from 2 months ago should be ok.

Is it the english demo from a couple of weeks ago or the very first demo from the beginning of 2002 (in the latter case, get the newer demo!)

've tried most of your suggestions Garrett, but I'm afraid it's still not working.

I did check the documentation on my sound card and it supports EAX.
Installed newest drivers for sound and graphics cards.
Installed EAX unified driver.
Unsinstalled botched install (got rid of the patch), rebooted, reinstalled, rebooted again.

I didn't reinstall directX since I have other games which require 8.1 and are working fine.

You mentioned changing video resolutions and such, but...to what exactly? Right now my display settings are at 1024X768, 32 bit.

I had read about the updated demo and thought that's what I got. I checked dates at various sites and it seems the newest I could find was 10/01/02. Is there one newer than that? Anyway, I'm redownloading it and will try one more time. Here's hoping.

Thanks again for your help.
