I am thinking of picking this game up since I rather love games like BG2 and IWD2. I had a few questions about it however:
Is it comparable to BG2 or IWD2? I know its more combat focused but is there still other things to do like explore cities and talk to people?
I liked the character building in IWD2, I hear TTOEE is better, is it really? Can I spend hours creating my character? (sometimes I have more fun creating the character then playing the game itself). Also, how hard would it be to play solo or with a small party?
Does it run at 1280x1024? It would be good If I could play it on my LCD screen.
Have the bugs been ironed out for the most part?
It seems to have gotten low scores in reviews even though they mostly have good things to say about it, apart from the bugs. |

1) It's more combat driven than BG2 or IWD2 and has a much simpler non-lineal story. There are only two cities, with perhaps 50 NPCs between them (but practically every one has a subquest to do). The temple itself probably doubles or triples the number of people to talk to and do things for.
2) Yes. It's much better. Not only are the feats more accurate to D&D 3.5 it provides you with the real amount of skill points characters are entitled to and introduces a ton more skills to spend these points on. Plus you can customize your characters appearance a little more than you can in BG2 or IWD2.
3) I can't see why not. The default is 1024x768, though I preferred it at 800 x 600 to get a little 'closer' to the action.
4) Yes, and there's a possibility of a second patch to get the leftovers. The first patch did a fantastic job, though, fixing 90% or more of the bugs people were complaining about.
5) I gave it a 90 in our review because it's one of the best rules conversions ever (the best really) and it's really, really fun. Reviewers that gave it low scores mainly gave it low scores because it's turn based combat... which is much slower than what you see in most modern CRPGS. Additionally, despite a hoarde of new skills to use in conversation the conversation trees tend to be 'to the point' instead of paragraph long options to choose from.
I think a lot of it is 'fear'. The game got a lot of bad word of mouth from people expecting the next Baldur's Gate 2. Perhaps reviewers got scared of losing their reader base or getting flamed and discredited by the masses. I'm fireproof, though, and I stick by what I say in my reviews. Fun = high score in RPGDot reviews. _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi

Well, I think I may be getting this game, however I am still concerned about the resolution, people say 1024x768 is small, what does that make 1280x1024? Is it playable at that res? |

I thought it was fine at 1024x768. I played through the whole game at that resolution. 1280x1024 would be okay, but it feels too small. _________________ Freeeeeeedom! Thank heavens it's summer!

Whoa! Slow down there... TOEE is a great game but it doesn't top the almighty BG2!
Play it in 800x600 to get the maximum enjoyment from it. Anything higher and it gets real hard to see some of the smaller details.
Don't forget to patch it! |

Hey, does anyone have a problem with the game sometimes locking up during or immediately after the battle with Hedrack? It's the only place in the whole game so far where this happens to me. It starts to stutter and then just stops responding,
Another question- Ever use the 5th level Wizard spell 'Mordekins Faithful Hound'? Is it supposed to be permanent? I used it and now I have this dog that follows me and never dissappears. He also doesn't seem to take any damage in battle no matter what. I assume this is a bug that they missed with the first patch. |

Character creating can take several hours, if you customize everything.
And it is certainly possible to play with a single character. I'm currently playing the game with a single wizard. Beginning was quite difficult (tried the very first battle at least 20 times, running away and killing opponents one by one works), but after learning web spell battles are easy. Also summon monster spell is necessary for a wizard with 4 HP.
Level was maximized to 10 quite quickly, so I took an hill giant fighter to my party. Battles are ridiculously easy now. |
