quote:
Gothic II Die Nacht des Raben English Translation Mod (G2DNdR ETM) - version 1.0
July 3rd 2004
Finally, is here! The english translation of Gothic II's addon: Die Nacht des Raben is offered to you by Gothic II Addon's Translation Team (G2ATT): Tiamat (adonys13@yahoo.com) - scripting, translating, mod package, installer; Gornsbestmate, Draakan, Xerxes712, Spunior, Eloroi - translating; Fallenadi, Dawil, Whailor, Magasun, Lemminkainen - additional help and support.
This is the result of ONE full month of hard work from G2aTT members, which voluteered and offered their free time to make something which Gothic 2's publishers should have done a long time ago. We had enough waiting months after months for the english/international version of the game and tons of unanswered yet simple questions: WHEN? WHEN? WHEN? Atari didn't do it ... JoWooD didn't do it ... so WE had to do it by ourselves!
If you are one from Atari or JoWooD corporations, please make sure that will never happen again: it's bad marketing, and WE are the ones which give you money for the game, so please show us a little respect, we didn't asked for anything more! Uhm... oh yeah, we did: WE WANT GOTHIC III !!!
G2DNdR ETM
The Gothic II Die Nacht des Raben English Translation Mod is a public BETA version of a Gothic II addon's Die Nacht des Raben mod. A very solid beta version, but still a BETA. Look in the VERSION HISTORY section to see current's version modifications.
As G2DNdR ETM it is a 3rd party mod, Atari, JoWooD and Piranha Bytes do not provide support for this file and no one should try to contact them about it. You can find bellow (in the BUG REPORTS and KNOWN BUGS / ISSUES section) all the info regarding known bugs/issues and how to report them to G2aTT. That will help us nail the bugs and make a better G2DNdR ETM for all of us.
Please make sure you're having both original Gothic II and Gothic II Die Nacht des Raben games, and you'd better buy the future official addon's english version too (for its full english voice acting and to support Piranha Bytes)!
LATEST VERSION / COMPATIBILITY
You should check for G2DNdR ETM's latest version in here: http://www.rpgdot.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=89259 .
Also, regarding newer G2DNdR ETM versions and their compatibility with saved games from older versions of G2DNdR ETM, there should be no problems excepting the fact that the log entries which you already have in your diary will remain the ones from the older version (as Gothic game save the catual text in it's save files, not a refferency to them) and won't be replaced with the newer version's ones. Nothing to do about it, excepting restarting the game... sorry But we're guessing most of you can live with it
LEGAL NOTE
As it is clearely stated in the G2aTT_License.txt licence text file, this mod needs to be used only with the original version of the software it's designed for. If you don't own a legal copy of Gothic II and Gothic II Die Nacht des Raben then you'll break the law by installing and using this mod too!
ALso, this mod can NOT be used in any form of comercial use, in part or as a whole, without its author written accept (as it's tsateted, again, in the G2aTT_License.txt licence text file). I guess you all know why we're needing to clearly say this...
LEGAL ASPECTS
Regarding the legal aspects of this translation mod, we can tell you that we used Gothic II's own mod kit to do it. It would have never been working otherwise (as it would have been a nightmare to hex edit Gothic II's data files to do it). And the mod kit was EXPRESSELLY released for 3rd party developers (ie Gothic II Die Nacht des Raben software owners) to can make and release their own modifications to the original game.
We couldn't find any statement (not in mod kit's Licence or in whatever else file from it, nor on mod kit's site) which let be known that the mods aren't legally allowed to be in other languages than german, or that some specific modifications to the original software aren't allowed (like this english translation mod one).
Maybe we didn't noticed it, and if this is the case, then any official from Atari, JoWooD or Piranha Bytes who see this is asked to contact us showing us where it's stated that a modification like this isn't legally allowed in order to immediatelly stop the distribution of this mod!
As G2DNdR ETM it's a 3rd party mod, Atari, JoWooD and Piranha Bytes do not provide support for this file and no one should try to contact them about it.
Also, Realms of Torment / Mourning game don't have anything in common with this mod, excepting the fact they kindly offered their assistance (and bandwith) to hosting it for all Gothic series fans! Any official from Atari, JoWooD or Prianha Bytes who see this mod hosted on their site and think this mod is illegal is asked to immediatelly contact them in order to stop the distribution of this mod at once!
REQUIREMENTS
Is VERY important to take note that G2DNdR ETM and the G2aTT absolutelly DON'T support software piracy, under no excuses or circumstancies. It's a must for you to own the original both Gothic II and Gothic II Die Nacht des Raben software in order to use it! If you're not, think twice, as what you're doing is not only breaking the law, but also hurting Piranha Bytes, the ones who developed this awesome game, and diserve better than that!
Both legal and moral aspects of this should prevent you from doing that, but anyway, if you'll think otherwise, then you'll break the law again, as the original Gothic II and Gothic II Die Nacht des Raben software are required to can play this mod too (as it is expreselly stated in the G2aTT_License.txt file)!
RECOMANDATIONS
We strongly adivce you (even if that would be a choice of your own), to also support this german series developer and its international release version by buying the future english version of Gothic II addon's, Die Nacht des Raben. This mod is only a subtitle one, and can't be better than the future full voice-acted official one, which will worth each penny you'll spent on it! So, if you really like this series immersion magic, and also want to support Piranha Bytes to continue this series, we think you should definatelly buy this future addon's english version!
INSTALLATION
You need to have the Gothic II Die Nacht des Raben installed and patched to the latest version (which is v2.6). IF you don't, then do that first, then run the G2aTT-DNdR ETM installer. The installer should autodetect your G2aTT-DNdR installation folder, if not, please press the Browse button and selectit by yourself.
The G2aTT-DNdR ETM installer have everything is needed to run it as a Gothic II mod (you don't need to have any Gothic II modkit version to run it, as the installer contains the v2.6a GothicStarter.exe and GothicGame.ini files).
You don't really need to uninstall a previous version of G2DNdR ETM before installing a new one as it overwrites it's own files and uses the same save folder as the last one, so no problems should occur if you're doing it like this. Anyway, if you want to do the things properly, you should uninstall your current version before instaling a new one, to avoid any potential problems.
Also, regarding the installation of Gothic II's addon Die Nacht des Raben over the english version of Gothic II, you could do it thanks to Piranha Bytes! All you need to do is to get Gothic II's german v1.30 patch, then launch it in the extract only mode (via a Run command line like this: Gothic2_130_de.exe /X ) and you can extract from it only the files you need (ie the Gothic2.exe v1.30 file). Replace the Gothic II english version's one with this new one, then install Gothic II addon's Die Nacht des Raben as usual.
UNINSTALLING
Just run the G2aTT-G2TNoTR Uninstall.exe from your main Gothic II installation folder. That little program will do everything for you!
RUNNING
As it is provided as a mod, the G2aTT-DNdR ETM doesn't harm in any way your original german Gothic II Die Nacht des Raben installation. All you need to do start the game is to run the GothicStarter.exe program from the System subfolder of your main Gothic II Die Nacht des Raben installation folder. Once started, you can choose if you want to run the original german Gothic II Die Nacht des Raben game, G2aTT-DNdR ETM or any other Gothic II mod you have installed.
BUG REPORTS
As G2DNdR ETM it is a 3rd party mod, Atari, JoWooD and Piranha Bytes do not provide support for this file and no one should try to contact them about it.
Please use the adonys13@yahoo.com email address instead for bug reports and support, and make sure that the email's subject is "G2aTT-DNdR ETM bug submission/support requirement". Try to avoid report as bugs the adapted translations, just report the translation if their general meaning is different than the german original one. Be carefull to make a precise mention regarding places / time / persons / situations in which you noticed the bug.
KNOWN BUGS / ISSUES
Sometimes the subtitles aren't displayed enough time for one to can read them in good conditions, that's a Gothic 2 issue (the subtitle for a certain dialog line is displayed as long as the sound file for that specific line is played - and in very rare cases the english subtitle is a little bit longer than th egerman one, causing the text to be scrolled faster than it should).
As we couldn't find any way to activate the subtitles during the movie playbacks, we had to make a little "hack" and add some new code lines to some script in order to make Xardas say in game (via dialog discussion) what he's telling in addon's intro movie too. So, if you think that's a bug, think twice before reporting it!
Also, we found out that there are some other movie subtitles for another addon movie (different than the intro one), if you manage to locate it, please let us know about it. Those lines looks like this:
(erstaunt) ... Menschen?
(surprised) ... Humans?
(arrogant) Humans are weak.
(arrogant) Only too fast do they fall victim to the tempation of evil.
Trying to deal with forces they can't understand, not to mention control.
Those who are pure in their belief have already started fighting the enemy.

DEVELOPMENT KIT
This mod wasn't done by brutal force (hex-editing Gothic II Die Nacht des Raben's data files), but working with the script files provided by Gothic II's mod kit. We marked inside its own scripts all the texts which needed translation, gathered all of them in a few big dump files, translated those dump files and then injected them back into Gothic II's marked script files (using automatic parsing scripts specially developed for this purpose by us).
What all that means? Well, it means it's EXTREMLY simple to make now professional translations of this game in any other languages. You don't need to bother to hunt needing translation lines through Gothic II's script files, as they are all gathered in the same place.

I'm so glad we are finally done. If anyone meets Hank or Angus, please punch them from me. There were sooo many dialog options with their names in them. I thought it would never end.
Massive pat on the back for all my fellow volunteers. It was quite a task and I for one had no idea it would take that much work.

Awesome work! The whole Gothic 2 comunity owes you guys a debt of gratitude.
I'm playing right now and it's working perfectly. It's actually kinda strange that, one moment you'll hear German speech, and the next, English. Like you feel lost and then at home again.
Eh, anyway, in all the excitement, you forgot to explain how to get the addon to install over an international version of G2. Unless I missed it or something.
But, for those of you that don't know, this is what I did:
Install your preferred english version of G2: 1.31 UK or 1.32 US.
Copy the German Gothic 2 executable to the directory of the international version (see below)
Install the addon to the english G2 directory
Apply addon patch 2.6
Install the translation mod
That's all there is to it. The only complication is where to get the German executable. Anyone have a link? I could upload it, but I don't know how long it will last (ISP webspace). |

Let me remind you that RPGDot in no way supports piracy! Links to executables will not be tolerated. Same for links to cracked exes, ISOs, etc.
The answer where you can find the German exe is simple:
On the discs of the German Gothic 2 included in the Gold Edition you have to buy to play the add-on.
Those who don´t buy an original seriously endanger an international Gothic 3 release. Keep in mind that both Gothic and G2 were not really successful outside the German market.
I also would suggest to carefully think where you want to post infos about the subtitle patch. We don´t want anybody to be sued by Atari or JoWooD. _________________ Webmaster GothicDot |

Gorath,
I understand that you need state RPGDOT's position.
But I think to call getting a NOCD version of the German executable piracy
is a gray area *in this particular case*. Keep in mind that anyone wanting to get it for the translation patch:
1. Owns a legitimate copy of the English Gothic 2
2. Owns a legitimate copy of the AddOn.
This situation is no different than what the German players have. Also keep
in mind that the only reason to have the EXE is not to exploit its
"NOCD" workaround, but simply as a temporary measure to "fool" the
Add-on into being installed correctly. The Addon eventually installs
its own EXE - negating any "benefit" that the NOCD had.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is... anyone who wants to pursue the
NOCD angle shouldn't feel guilty about it.
..AND if you want to avoid this dilema alltogether, don't be stupid like I did: Get the GOLD edition instead of just the addon. I don't think its that much more.
(And ... of course... you could always just wait ...as any well adjusted person would do. ) _________________ All shall hear the words of Karras...the words of Karras |

@Elkston
That is why I suggested to buy the German Gothic 2 Gold Edition. It is only 30 EUR from www.rollenspiel-shop.de to ship to usa.
I believe there is a way to bypass the EXE all together so not to use it as a place holder. Raven will install its own EXE. The indentifier at the beginning tells the progam what version and stuff it is. I can tell you how it is done, but..may get upset with me.
The Gold Edition already has the G2 patched to 1.30 and the Raven 2.6 inclusive. It only needs a slight adjustment to install. Much easier. _________________ Wo ist mein Sumpfkraut? |

Eh, sorry about that, Gorath. I wasn't trying to promote any piracy around here. I guess I just got caught up in the moment. Anyway, I had the US and UK versions, as well as the addon and the German version of G2, which I bought from a friend who, thought was going ot learn the language, but gave up.
elkston, however, brings up some very good points. But, I won't post any EXE's.
If I knew I was going to give up on German and waited until now, I would have bought the Gold version, as Xeres712 stated, and saved a lot of money o_O |

Gorath, we'll enter with this on moving sands, but the LEGAL turth is that:
1) ANY owner of an original piece of software has the LEGAL right to make a backup copy for the media on which his LEGAL software is shipped on (CD,s etc), so in case this media it is damaged, he'll still have it. In fact, talk with rare CD's collectionaires and you'll see they all uses backup copies to avoid damaging the very rare original media. A backup media it's easy to replace, while an original media from let's say 1990 is not!
2) ANY owner of an original piece of software has the LEGAL right to own a backup for his software. He's not breaking the law as long as both original and backup copy are handled toghether all the time (like he can't barrow his backup or original software to a friend, that will mean he'll break the law - but he can borrow both of them)
3) DUE to the points 1) and 2) and to the fact that today NO legal backup of almost any piece of software can work by it's own (ie they will be recognized by the protection system of that software as "illegal copies") they are allowed by LAW to own NO CD versions of those executables. Otherwise sites like [site names removed by Gorath] would have never been considered llegal sites, but illegal and they would have been shut down in a blink of an eye! But it's not the case!
Regarding the legal aspects of this translation mod, I can tell you that we used Gothic II's own mod kit to do it. It would have never been working otherwise. And that mod kit was EXPRESSELLY released for 3rd party developers (owners of Gothic II Die Nacht des Raben software) to can make their own modifications to the game. I couldn't find any place in mod kit's Licence which states that the mods aren't legally allowed to be in other languages than german, or that some specific modifications to the original software aren't allowed (like this english translation mod one).
Maybe we didn't noticed it, and in this case, any official who see this is asked to contact us proving that this mod is illegal and we'll retreat it from the net at once!
Thank you!
I removed the site names. Our anti piracy policy prohibits naming sites for noCD cracks. Users could easily find them with a search engine.

Your enumerated legal statements are all wrong.
At least in the EU (in those countries which already ratified the new copyright laws, to be more precise; Germany for sure and I think also the UK) you are allowed to make a backup copy for personal use if -and only if- the program is not copy protected. You are not allowed to bypass copy protection to make a backup. Copying copy protetion is considered bypassing.
All tools which can be used to bypass CP are now illegal. Yes, this means Daemon Tools, Alcohol and CloneCD are illegal, at least in Germany and increasingly so in the whole EU. It also means devs from those countries can no longer legally test their own games for compatibility with such software. Using NoCD cracks is also illegal because you modify the CP and change the original program. I read this in an article by a lawyer in the current PC Action. That use of NoCD cracks is usually not punished if you own an original is a different thing.
I don´t know why certain sites are still online, but maybe offering noCD patches is not illegal while _using_ them is illegal?!
G2 and the add-on are copy protected. If you´re using a European version there is a certain probability that you are bound by European law.
While I´m of course no lawyer my personal opinion -which does not necessarily reflect RPGDot´s opinion- is that if somebody owns originals of both G2 and TNotR it´s tolerable to use external patches to make them work. _________________ Webmaster GothicDot |

Well, I'm not a lawyer msyelf neither, so i don't know for sure. But the fact that above mentionesd sites are still alive, it means they are stone solid from legal point of view, isn't it?
Anyway, I modified both installer and the first post of this thread to clearely reflect the fact that both original Gothic II and Gothic II Die Nacht des Raben are required in order to install and use the mod. No mention of any NOCD is made or recomanded, nor in installer, its text files or above posts. The legal aspect of NOCD use post was a simple theoretic discussion.
Also added the recomandation to still buy the future oficial addon's english version and also the willing-to-take-it-down-if-considered-illegal note.
If you already have the installer when you'll read this for the first time, then please download it again. Thank you!

Okay
Another missing point you should mention is that PB, Atari and JoWooD do not provide support for this file and noone should try to contact them about it. _________________ Webmaster GothicDot |

Okay,
I've played about 6 hours straight so far and everything is great.
The translations are quite good and for the most part don't seem clunky or "translated". It sounds like natural English -- and most importantly -- it sounds like Gothic dialog. You know what I mean - the sort of dry, matter-of-fact way that many of the characters communicate. I especially like how you got some of the humourous lines exactly right.
Granted there are a few mistakes -- typos, missing words, at least 1 item property (mana essence) seem to be misabled. I am collecting most of these so I can make a report later on.
Regarding the game itself -- it feels like I am playing a brand new Gothic 2. New items, new quests, enhanced sound effects, more detailed backstory. And I haven't even gotten close to going to the "addon" world yet. I'm just talking about the City and its surrounding area.
No more spoilers from me at this time....
Thanks again to the translation team... _________________ All shall hear the words of Karras...the words of Karras |

Well... there is a really simple way to grab the exe in a legal way.
In few words... Pirana Bytes give it to us for free!
Just download the deutches patch 1.30 from any site you want.
Then launch it not with double click, but from the command line, in this way:
gothic2_130_de.exe /X
In this way the installation starts in EXTRACT mode, and you can extract from the installation archive only the files yu need. In this case... gothic2.exe
Hope this will be useful to many.
