two combat control schemes

Hi all! I just picked up Gothic 2 this weekend. Somehow this series slipped under my radar until now. I've never seen a game get such a ho-hum reaction in mainstream reviews and such a passionate reaction from normal gamers who've played through it.

I'm trying to decide which of the two combat control schemes to use, and I want to make sure I understand the differences. From what I've seen, with the Gothic 1 scheme, I can swing left, swing right, swing forward, and block. With the Gothic 2 scheme, I can swing left, swing right, and parry. Can I parry with the Gothic 1 scheme? Can I swing forward and block with the Gothic 2 scheme? Is chaining combat moves possible with both schemes?

Thanks!

Wellcome to the forums.

I prefer gothic1 fighting system.

Use both fighting systems and you'll find out which you like better.

Welcome to the forums!

'S' or 'arrow-down' blocks in the classic scheme. The new scheme supports 'lock on target' instant potions and one-click fighting.

Patriot is right. Try them both and decide which one you prefer. The old controls are preferable if you want to maintain the option to play Gothic 1 later.

The classic scheme -which can be a bit frustrating in the beginning- is the way the game is meant to be played. The new controls were added for the Diablo crowd. Combat is easier with the new controls.

I like new combat system. And I don't think it is related to Diablo crowd in any way, simply the improvement of the game comes not only from the story and pretty looks, but also UI and gameplay. While G1 was and is very good game, the controls are really annoying. G2 controls are a step in right direction, removing alot of unnecessary clicking, allowing you do enjoy the game without unneeded additional physical work. Hopefully, with G3, they'll optimize controls even more.
