I'm a Dark Elf in the Thieves guild, working for Big at the moment. On the hire a wizard quest, where you need 4 raw chucks of ebony, I have no idea where to get it. I'm just a frail, little thief, and I cant go into mines, fighting atronoches. So please, tell me where I can steal 4 raw ebony.

Several of the alchemy merchants will sell it, but it ain't cheap. The enterprising young filcher might be able to grab it off the shelf if he's quick.

OK, thanks, but can you tell me a direct location? I can steal anything, I have 100 sneak and 100 camo for 10 seconds, enough time to grab 4 ebony. So could you tell me what shops and cities I can steal it from?

Clickety-click, move us into Spoilers...
Right, the easiest place to get Raw Ebony from, in my opinion, is the Caldera Ebony Mine. Use a guild-guide to get to Caldera, head out the North-West (?) gate, clamber onto the left-hand verge, and find a path that leads up into the hills. Wind your way through until you reach a path, turn left onto it and follow it around. You'll come across the Caldera mining complex, which you want to pass straight through, over the bridge and into the mine entrance.
There's nothing aggressive in there, as long as you're not on really, really bad terms with the Redorans, and there's lots of Ebony to collect. Just make sure no one's watching you when you grab it!
Ebony is rather heavy - make sure you've got a lot of inventory space free, or be prepared to Intervention or Recall back to civilisation.
